You can't overestimate the influence the Camorra has in Campania. It's absolutely massive, they are involved in all levels of government.
On the other hand we cannot just let Pompei crumble. It is one of the most amazing places I've ever been to, precisely because it connects us to the everyday life of ancient peoples in a way that very few sites in the world can. I didn't even realize this before I visited, but they have not excavated the entire town. If you walk east (I think) from the main entrance by the train station, you eventually reach a point where the buildings recede into a hillside and the ground plane suddenly rises up 25'. |
