Atlantic Canada Concert Scene
As promised in the Moncton thread, due to the large volume of recent concert chatter, I feel that a new thread devoted to the Maritime concert scene is definitely warranted. So, without further adieu, here it is. Do with it what you may. :D

Looking forward to the Kiss concert in Hali!

Who will rock Magnetic Hill?
Published Thursday March 5th, 2009 Concerts coming, but few clues as to who, when and how often By Brent Mazerolle Times & Transcript Staff Maritime music fans are wondering if the annual summer pilgrimage to Moncton's Magnetic Hill concert site is on the horizon, especially as major concerts in two genres have been announced for Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. So far there is silence from Moncton, but one of the people at the centre of the city's concert business is confident Maritimers will have at least one show they won't want to miss at Magnetic Hill this year. Ian Fowler, the general manager of Moncton's Recreation, Parks, Tourism and Culture department, which manages the concert site, said yesterday he could not even hint at when concert announcements might be coming, let alone name acts, as timing and contents of announcements are marketing strategies closely guarded by promoters. However, he could say, "we expect the first contract to be concluded in the next 10 days." When the other party to that contract might go public is unpredictable. While announcements of a KISS concert in Halifax and a Reba McEntire/Tim McGraw concert in Prince Edward Island would seem to add some urgency to Moncton getting on the 2009 mega-concert map, promoters at the level Moncton is pursuing are thinking in terms of unveiling entire tours rather than single concerts. "I can understand people are wondering what is happening," Fowler said. "I'd have loved to be out with news by now." However, he said he's confident there will be one big show at the hill, as has been the annual tradition since the Rolling Stones played four years ago. Fowler also pronounced himself hopeful that there will be a second show at the hill, and though far less certain, he said a third show was not out of the question. "We are talking to three potential five-star acts. However, I don't mean to make people think there will automatically be three shows." |
Here's a story completely unrelated to the Maritime concert scene- BUT, I will try to tie it in at the end:
Def Leppard/Poison tickets went on sale this am for the Molson Amphitheater in Toronto (capacity, 16,000). I was SHOCKED, AMAZED and APPALLED at the following ticket price points on Ticketmaster: "Poison Nothin' But a Good Time Tickets"- $675 each (Front Row) "Poison I Want Action Tickets"- $475 each (Next 2 or 3 rows) "Poison Ride the Wind Tickets"- $275 each (The rest of 100 level seating, roughly 900 seats) (I'm not getting into the Def Leppard ticket packages, but at least they include a laminated pass and a t-shirt.) THEN, it was the "regular" prices for the rest of the venue: $125 each 200 level $90 each 300 level $60 each 400 level $30 each for the lawn AND THEN, you get the Ticketmaster "convenience charge" of $11.50 and the building facility fee $3.75 per ticket. You can print your tickets at home, but that's another $2.50 per ticket, or snail mail them to your home for free. The Poison ticket packages can only be picked up at the box office on the day of the concert. AC/DC also did this with their 2 shows at Skydome for the floor seats. Why am I telling you this? First off, I don't think Ticketmaster is in the Maritimes. You are lucky. For everyone else, they are lucky if Ticketmaster's site doesn't hang up before you complete your purchase. Otherwise, your reserved tickets are back on the table for someone else to grab. Next, "Building Facility fees" could some day be levied on tickets at new facilities under construction or planned. Don't be surprised if you see this on tickets for the new stadium and arena in Moncton or Halifax. Also, don't be surprised if this "scheme" is used to finance and get these new buildings off the ground. About Magnetic Hill: Wouldn't it be cool if they converted the VIP bleachers into permanent seating in the style of an Amphitheater? Maybe 6,000 seats around 20 rows? You could still have a "pit" area that could hold 1,500 or so. You could also still see the stage from the rest of the Hill like you can now. All concert goers would need to do is pay the dreaded building facility fee. :D All in all, you can't complain about the prices for any of the outdoor concerts in the Maritimes. Compared to the scenario above, it's pretty good value and arguably better entertainment, depending on what music you like. I remember seeing VIP tickets available for the concerts on The Hill, does anyone remember what they included exactly and how much $$$ they were? |
I don't care about anyone else coming to the region this year, expect for Neil Young who makes me giddy in anticipation.

Excellent work kirjtc2, I'm glad to see this thread take off. One more thing to add; although an official announcement is still forthcoming, Steve Murphy announced this evening on ATV news that AC/DC will be playing at Magnetic Hill in August. I think he said it was going to be August 6th but I could be wrong. He also said that a second concert announcement for this hill may be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks.   |
Man I'm so torn, my love for AC/DC has rammed right into my policy of not driving to Moncton to purchase goods or services.

C'mon kwajo, we're not so bad......It's time to embrace the dark side. |

All 90,000 of us rocking and having a blast on the hill really won't give a shit who does or doesn't want to purchase goods in moncton. |

I think kwajo was being facetious (at least I hope so). |
WOOT...AC/DC! :D
Ill be there for sure...it may not be larger than the Stones, but I'm sure it will be of a similar size. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3663/...222f39eea3.jpg source: Charles Leblancs Other Blog |

The city has said in response to that news show that 'nothing is confirmed or signed' so until an official announcement don't get too excited.
