METRO VANCOUVER -- The provincial government announced today it will build a $2.46 billion 10-lane bridge to replace the aging Port Mann Bridge.

The bridge, which will be built to accommodate rapid bus service and future rapid transit, will be financed by tolls over the 40-year tenure of the contract.

Commuters will pay $3 each way to access the new bridge, although there will be concessions for truckers, bus and taxi drivers, Transport Minister Kevin Falcon said.

The bridge is expected to be built by 2013.

The province had originally planned to twin the Port Mann, but said it would be cheaper to build a new bridge and save on maintenance costs.

The project also includes widening Highway 1, adding two lanes each way on the east side of the bridge and an extra lane in both directions on the west side.

Premier Gordon Campbell said the new bridge over the Fraser River will create 800 jobs and cut commuting time by one-third.

"A single span will clear the bottlenecks that have plagued commuters for years and years," he said.

Falcon said new infrastructure is needed to accommodate another million more people in Metro Vancouver in 20 years.

The capital cost of the project, including upgrades to 37 km of Highway 1 on either side of the bridge, is approximately $2.46 billion, the province said. The total cost, including operating and maintenance, rehabilitation and interest, will be released when the contract is finalized but is expected to be approximately $3.3 billion.

Of that, the province is financing $1.15 billion in the form of a repayable loan, which is beingmatched by bank financing. The proponent is putting forward their own equity to pay for the remaining $1 billion, the release said.

NDP MLA Bruce Ralston said the deal to build a new bridge - at a higher cost - was made after plans were announced to twin the bridge.

"It seems this was negotiated after the contract was awarded," he said, adding other bidders weren't offered the same opportunity.

Already the Alex Fraser Bridge has the largest bridge pylons in Canada, and this bridge must have pylons that are quite larger than even those

Piling equipment has moved to the middle section of the bridge/river. It towers over the Port Mann. (Whats the specs on this thing ?) A bridge pylon on the south side is visible if your in anything larger than a car. The pylon is massive, roughly standing 30+ feet high now, easily Alex Fraser size. They should easily be 500+ feet tall when finished.

I'd be willing to guess alot more then that. In the render each of the traincars on the ground is atleast 50 feet long. If you count ten out, sanding them vertically end to end only gets you 1/2-2/3rds the way up one of the support structures, while they are about 1 1/2 to 2 times as tall as the old Port Mann in the renders.

In addition to this, the main span of the old port mann is over 1000 feet. If this, and the new tower heights, is accurately reflected in the rederings, tipping one of the new towers over across the river, starting at the east pier of the old Port Mann, brings it fairly close to the other pier 1000+ feet away.

Lane Shift on Highway 1 from 1st Avenue to Grandview Highway Exits
On June 26, 2009, Highway 1 improvement work in the Vancouver/Burnaby area will begin. Travellers are advised to expect the following changes:
• Eastbound and westbound lanes on Highway 1 will be slightly narrowed between the 1st Avenue and Grandview Highway exits in Vancouver and shifted toward the existing roadway shoulder for
approximately 18 months (see graphic below).
• During this time, crews will be working in the centre median to strengthen existing overpasses for the additional highway lane to be constructed.
These changes will be well signed and traffic control personnel and equipment will be on site to direct
traffic. Drivers are requested to obey posted construction speeds and watch for construction information signs and flag persons, particularly at night, when lane closures may be required.
Please use caution when travelling through a construction zone and adhere to posted construction zone speed limits. Traffic fines are double in construction zones.
A key goal of the Port Mann/Highway 1 Project is to maximize predictability during construction and
minimize disruption for commuters, goods movers, residents and the public. Construction updates will be issued regularly as the project progresses.


btw, which thread is the PMB thread? Theres two now??? Perhaps make one for the PMB/H1 project, and one for the SFPR???

Okay, that makes sense... I must have misread PRMH as PMH1 for some reason...

Re: the 18-months.... yeah... except considering that stretch IS already clogged, with cars moving ~10-20km/hr at rush hour, you won't really notice THAT much of a difference if the lanes have just shifted over.

Will tour it all (and the GEB) when I'm in town next week! :cool:

interesting that the old overpasses are just going to be reinforced rather than replaced entirely... i mean, i know it would be impossible to completely replace them without closing the highway, but they are so old

They've never considered Rapid Bridge Replacement?

They've done it in Ontario before.

Build a bridge next to the site, shut the highway down on a weekend, demolish older bridge, and then shift new bridge onto foundations...

open within 72 hours.

It's great that the engineers who designed these overpasses had the foresight to plan for a future expansion. If you drive under one of these, like ones near Highway 1 and E 1st, you can see that the overpass supporting structure is wider than the highway itself and same goes for Cassiar tunnel...if only those building the George Massey tunnel didn't downsize from 6 lanes...
