A Day in Denver: A Time-Lapse Project

Over the past 14 months I have been working on a time-lapse project with Denver as the subject. I planned out 37 different angles around Denver and shot short time-lapses at each place. I chose a 3 minute song for the project and compiled each time-lapse sequence to go along with it. 9,186 photos were taken and 255GB of data was processed to make this 3 minute video.

I never expected to do a full project like this so I just used a basic tripod, basic intervalometer, and weighed down my camera with my bag and an 8 pound workout weight (yes it worked fantastic!).. Some of the higher up shots I did without a tripod and just hung the camera off the ledge tying off the strap to something. Those shots were very nervewracking, needless to say.

When it came down to processing, I had to experiment around to get a good system down. It came down to this:

Shoot in RAW -> Make adjustments in Adobe Camera RAW -> Batch RAW to JPEG in Photoshop -> Import JPEG's in Sony Vegas @ 24 frames per second -> Crop to 16:9 / add digital movement if needed -> Export sequence to main project timeline -> Cut sequence / adjust speed if needed -> Render final video..

Overall, it took roughly 1 hour of my time (including shooting, processing, and editing) for 1 second of the final video. It was a lot of work but I'm very glad to have it complete!

Without further ado, here is the video and below are the stills that best represent each sequence!

These are actual frames from the time-lapse project:

And now I need to go to Denver. Great work, man.

JoninATX Dec 17, 2013 8:30 PM

Nice pictures of Denver! Need to go up there and visit someday.

Great project. Way too much patience.

The two distant segments from the mountains were my favorite. Did I catch fireworks in there?

seventwenty Dec 18, 2013 12:41 AM

Atta brah.

Fantastic video. 3 viewings so far. I am sure there will be more.

There was a LOT of patience involved but I think it paid off! The two shots were off of Lookout Mountain (name self-explanatory), and they were taken on July 4th! So yes, lots of fireworks!

Fantastic pics of a fantastic city!

SignalHillHiker Dec 18, 2013 1:04 PM

It reminds me somewhat of Calgary. Very beautiful! Nice to see the public transit and people on the street downtown.

It always amazes me just how far out American cities extend from their downtown cores. It seems like the foreground of this shot should really be pitch black at this point:

You do realize you have suburbs in Canada, too? You're talking about only a few miles in that shot.

xzmattzx Dec 18, 2013 2:48 PM

Truly a work of art. A an artist can come up with ways to implement ideas, like how you did.

i_am_hydrogen Dec 18, 2013 3:28 PM

^Ditto. I'm sure a tremendous amount of work went into this. And it was worth it. The finished product is stunning and very professional. Congrats!

That shot shows Lakewood and West Denver, so about 11-12 miles from Downtown to the foot of the mountain he was standing on. Another 13-14 miles eastward to where it turns black. This it is a low population density even for the US. 2.5-3 million people (3 if you count Boulder County, which is largely beyond the built urban area I am talking about) and about 25-30 miles end-to-end. I'm not quite sure how this compares with Canadian cities, but I too had a similar thought about the extend of American sprawl this summer when I was in Europe. In Prague, a metro area of about 2.3 million according to Wikipedia, you could easily see a substantial amount of the countryside from a geographic high point. The same was true in Vienna, and even in much larger London from the top of the giant wheel. In Denver, and most large American cities, all you can usually see at night is lights stretching all the way to the horizon (unless you manage to get 1,500+ feet above it all like Ryan did).

I shouldn't comment though without also saying how much I too love this piece. Amazing work! I have also watched it several times already.

Incredible project, Ryan! Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely beautiful. I appreciate so many hours of work to produce this spectacular time-lapse. The result is a magnific composition of pictures creating this, I repeat, spectacular video.

I´ve read 9,186 photos, that´s amazing. We can see a city full of life, the movement in its streets and highways...

What about Denver? Simply a very pretty city. I like its skyline with The Rocky Mountains in the background.

I hope you´ve the patience to try with another time-lapse. The result is spectacular.

Congratulations and greetings from Madrid, Spain.:worship:

You guys are all so kind! Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy it!!

The shot from Lookout Mountain, as said, was only 11ish miles west of the core. Denver really sprawls north and south and this vantage point only shows about 1/4 of it.

AJW Dec 18, 2013 10:05 PM

Brilliant stuff, thanks for all the time, effort and talent you put into this.

Cirrus Dec 19, 2013 4:13 AM

Great work. The Lookout Mountain shots are probably my favorite too, plus of course the transity ones.
