Flint, Michigan | Woodcroft Estates and Carriagetown

Flint's Woodcroft Estates neighboorhood was founded in 1925, and was home to many of the early automobile executives. Still home to the city's upper-class, Woodcroft is located on the southwest side of the city (area number 1 on the map), across the highway from the remaining GM factories and Bishop Airport.

The Carriagetown Neighboorhood (area number 2 on the map) is adjacent to the northwest side of downtown Flint. It's name comes from the fact that it was home to the Durant-Dort Carriage company, which would later turn into General Motors. This neighboorhood has seen a significant amount of decline over the years, but it starting to reap the benefits of the downtown redevelopment that has been occuring in Flint, as well as an increase in demand for student housing at UM-Flint and Kettering University.

That hotel renovation is looking nice. How long until it's completed?

robk1982 Jan 22, 2009 4:23 AM

They want it open by fall, in time for the new school year.

flar Jan 22, 2009 4:25 AM

Two tours in one, thanks.

LMich Jan 22, 2009 5:38 AM

More of this, Robk, really. We don't see nearly enough Flint around here, and we need to.

I'd never even heard of Woodcroft, so it was quite a surprise. Last time I was in Flint (some years ago), I took a little drive around Carriagetown and the potential and what is going on is amazing.

Flint's got what it takes to come back if it can find some outsourcable industries to latch on to.

Is Atwood Stadium considered to be in Carriagetown? I played football there once in high school. The AstroTurf was brutal.

Jibba Jan 22, 2009 7:35 AM

Not the most happening place ever, but it was nice to see some of those great old homes--relics from a by-gone era, unfortunately. Thanks for posting these.

Atwood Stadium is on the western edge of Carriagetown - I didn't walk all the way over there yesterday, but here's a picture from the distance and one from last spring.

LMich, I actually hadn't heard of Woodcroft either until a few weeks ago. I always knew there were some huge houses around there, but didn't know exactly where. I'm still learning about many of the neighboorhoods as I go.

hudkina Jan 22, 2009 8:22 PM

Isn't there another famous mansion district in Flint? I remember seeing a photo tour of a mansion district in Flint a few years ago. I can't remember if it was Woodcroft or not, but it was supposedly home to a lot of early 20th century mansions.

Cool...literally

Ex-Ithacan Jan 22, 2009 11:29 PM

^ Yeah, gave me a bit of a chill too TOP.

Wonderful to see some good stuff from Flint. I know the city has been through hell, so the renovations are a pleasure to see. I didn't realize there was still such a "rich" hood with such large houses. Thanks for the tour(s), and look forward to more.

oh yeah, cool old firehouse too.

There are some larger homes across Miller Road from the Michigan School for the Deaf (not too far from Woodcroft) as well as down by Thread Lake and the Flint Golf Course.

xzmattzx Jan 23, 2009 4:03 AM

Nice pictures. I liked seeing those old factories and headquarters and stuff.

That's why I stopped taking pictures in the wintertime, up here. If it's not snowing, its depressingly cloudy. The imagery just kind of compounds the general misery for many not used to seeing these cities.

denveraztec Jan 23, 2009 5:54 PM

Flint has some beautiful homes!

DeBaliviere Jan 23, 2009 8:59 PM

Thanks so much for posting - I really enjoyed the pics.

Yeah, its Woodlawn Park, my neighborhood! Although I am quite a few blocks from the mansions it is an awesome neighborhood. Also know as the College Cultural District I am within walking distance to the Flint Institute of Art, Flint Institute of Music, Whiting Auditorium, Sloan Museum, Longway Planetarium, Flint Public Library, and just a little bit further from Downtown.

I will post some pics of the neighborhood if people are interested, including the mansions.

bobjgumby Mar 24, 2009 4:46 AM

You can see Woodlawn Park on the map at the beginning of this thread. it is bounded by I-69 to the south Dort Hwy to the east Robert T. Longway Blvd to the North and Mott College to the West. Court St. runs smack dab through the middle going East and west. The mansions are located along Woodlawn Park Dr. at the southwest of the neighborhood just south of Mott College.

I love living like 4 blocks from a golf course.
