HOUSTON / GALVESTON | The Sun Will Keep Rising

Nice varied set of photos! I'll be back in Houston to run the marathon in 2 months, which coincides with the 10 year anniversary since I moved away. I'm looking forward to seeing the city again and also doing a little day trip down to Galveston if the weather is decent! (I've actually been back twice over the past 10 years, though not since February 2011)

Great pictures! Good to see the Astrodome!

Do you happen to know the two lowrise Mid-Century Modern buildings are?

Thank you, and good luck on the run! I imagine winter to be great weather in Houston, as it was still a bit warmer than I'd like in late October.

That is the Academic Mall at The University of St. Thomas. Like seemingly everything else in Houston, it was designed by Philip Johnson. Let me know if you meant another building, since Mid-Century lowrises are definitely a thing in Houston, lol.

Very stylish!! The US has bucket loads of great architecture.

That is the main building of the Menil Collection. A cluster of museums that includes the Rothko Chapel (Also pictured up there), a non-denominational chapel designed jointly by artist Mark Rothko and Philip Johnson, the Cy Twombly gallery, as well as Byzantine Fresco Chapel, and a converted supermarket installation.

The main building you pointed out was designed by Renzo Piano, and houses a collection of art that I can most aptly describe as the modernist equivalent of our Barnes Foundation here in Philly. All of the aforementioned are free, and definitely worth a visit if in Houston. The best part is that all of these exist in their original neighborhood, and appear to have developed organically, as opposed to the uprooting of the Barnes to the Parkway.

If only all residential streets in our cities had trees like these! Hopefully developers take note.

Great photo set.

I'm alway struck by how Rice is in many ways more architecturally like Stanford, UCLA and USC than like the gothic or colonial campuses back east.

And I keep forgetting to go to Galveston. But I'll make a point of it next time I'm in Houston.

Agreed. The residential tree coverage in some of the residential neighborhoods is something that I would say Houston does particularly well. This particular neighborhood, Boulevard Oaks, is gorgeous and very reminiscent of Philly's Main Line in many ways. Except, dare I say it, this may even be nicer than the residential areas of the Main Line.

There is another topic occurring in City Discussions regarding city beauty. I think tree coverage plays a huge role in that. Tree coverage and local flora seem to be overlooked in that discussion, but are definitely a huge factor for me.

Galveston was a huge point for me to make this trip. I may or may not ever get back to Houston, so I made it a point to get there for a few hours. I'd definitely recommend the same.
