I am puzzled as well...

I think part of what he's getting at is that we're going for bells and whistles; sexy versus practical; political win versus what's really needed.

I forget what study it is, but it's often quoted, health care (hospitals, etc) only account for 22% of healthy solutions. The greatest impact on health is education at 28% but incrementally improving our education system isn't as flashy as building a children's hospital.

What is not included in that? I assume there are soft costs and foundation costs already incurred.

You guys should be a lot more excited about this project, the site planning and logistics are quite complex being that a 7 floor building being built between a Parkade and the existing hospital! Two tower cranes and two concrete placing booms will be onsite. I believe this will be the first project in Saskatchewan to have more than stationary concrete pump. This is quite an exciting project!

I'm sure I'll be more excited once those cranes are up....

Children's hospital construction could start in July

By Jonathan Charlton, The StarPhoenix June 9, 2015

Construction on the main building of the Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan is on track to start in July.

After a three-week extension to the tendering period, planners are now reviewing three bids, project director Craig Ayers said.

They plan to make a recommendation to the Saskatoon Health Region and Ministry of Health by the end of June, and it won't take long for the successful contractor to mobilize, he said. The foundation was finished on schedule in March.

Each bid includes alternatives that would increase or decrease the cost of the project, he said. The site itself is also a factor - it's located between Royal University Hospital and the parking structure, and contractors are constrained in their ability to lay down materials.

"Given the complexity of the project, there's actually a fair number of items that need to be reviewed to make a recommendation on whether those alternative prices will be adopted," Ayers said.

The total budget for the hospital is just under $260 million, with $235 million coming from the provincial government.

Ayers wouldn't speculate on a final price tag and couldn't comment on the bids, but said the $260-million budget is a hard limit.

"What we're doing is, we're trying to work through to review these alternates to do the best job we can to get as close as possible to that approved budget."

The hospital is forecast to be completed by the end of 2017.

This is a wonderful project for Saskatchewan kids - and it's about time! It's just likely that not everyone here is overly fanatical about it.

Great project though!

It IS a good project for the province, BUT....Should have been an extension of the City Hospital with the Children's Museum and redeveloped Kinsmen Park for family and kids right next door with beautiful green space for families with children in the hospital to enjoy....just saying....

Children's hospital delayed
Scheduled to open in 2018

By Janet French, The StarPhoenix July 22, 2015

Quote:

Delays have pushed back the opening of the new Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan into 2018, the project director says.

Although the Saskatoon Health Region had initially hoped to award the contract for the estimated $260-million hospital by early July, that announcement likely won't happen until September, project director Craig Ayers said Tuesday.

Thanks to the holdup, construction likely won't start until mid-September, Ayers said. The region had hoped workers would be back on the site this month.

"Certainly, we're reminded of the complexity of the project and all the details," Ayers said.

In the spring, when the health region was finalizing the building's blueprints for tender, engineers pressed administrators for extra time to make sure the drawings were accurate and complete, Ayers said.

"(It's) in the best interest of the project we're doing things right."

Then, the bidders asked for three more weeks to turn in their proposals.

Although the team evaluating bids from the three finalists had initially said it would choose a winning bidder within 60 days, it extended that period to 105 days, Ayers said.

The evaluation team includes people from the health region, the provincial Health Ministry, the children's hospital management team and the prime architect, and is overseen by a "fairness monitor," Ayers said.

"They're going to start the construction later. But in the overall interest of the project, we'd suggest this is time well spent to make sure that we're doing things right."

The region has $258.9 million available to build the facility adjacent to Royal University Hospital. Ayers wouldn't say whether the three bids received are higher, lower or on budget. The region will release a specific price and construction schedule when it reveals the winning bidder in September, he said.

Quite an imposing presence on the riverbank, and highly visible too -- all the way from the Buckwold Bridge to the south, and Circle Drive Bridge to the north. Beats looking at the brutalist wing of RUH that it's now blocking from view.

Yes Echoes I always liked the view traveling from east to west with city hospital in view, now we will have a hospital going from west to east, nice.
