Council Grove, KS - The Flint Hills Series Part 5

Manhatten, KS - The Flint Hills Series Part 1
Junction City, KS - The Flint Hills Series Part 2
Abilene, KS - The Flint Hills Series Part 3
Salina, Ks - The Flint Hills Series Part 4

After leaving Salina, it was time to head back east into the Flint Hills, and off the beaten path for a change. The sun had started to drop pretty low in the sky and I wanted to find a place to stay the night. If I was smart enough, I would have stopped in Junction City or Manhattan. But for whatever reason, I thought there would be a cheap motel in Council Grove. However, with a population of only about 2,000, there was only one choice. A bed and breakfast looking place that was easily over $100. (I think). So I made my way back through the hills in the pitch black back to Manhattan, an easy 40 miles, and plopped my head down on a $37 bed courtasy of Motel 6!! The next morning, I made my way back through the hills and into Council Grove I came. Camera and all!! Am I rambling again?? :gaah:

This sweet lady "demanded" that I take a picture of this old building with her standing in front of it. She has worked here for 17 years. I'm assuming the building is as old as it says!!

Well, in a town as small as this, I can only take so many picture before you finally get the point!! So it was on to the next destination somewhere in the Flint Hills... See you there!! :D

Not to second guess you, but it looks like you could have had a room for like $55-70 if the rooms in the motel or annex section of the hotel: check out the rate card linked to on this page http://cottagehousehotel.com/rates.shtml

Looks like it had a lot of historical spots for being such a small town.

Nice pictures. It looks like a nice historic small town.

You spelled Manhattan wrong again, in this thread this time.

Wow... this is my favorite Kansas city yet! The first photo is haunting... and I love the photo of all the branches... very artistic! This city has some wonderful historic building stock! Also... the weather seems to have improved for this set!

I was going to say the exact same thing! Anyway, that was awesome, KC. Great set!

Yes I did!! It has now been corrected!! :D

The weather was fine that day, perhaps a little overcast which means the sun wasn't glaring into my camera which it frequently does!! :hell:

After checking out the rates provided by Yerfdog, I probably should have spent the night in Council Grove. However, I would have missed about 30 miles worth of breathtaking scenery. So I'm kinda glad I stayed in Manhattan for the night. ;)

Thanks for the comments so far. I'm not used to doing smaller towns, but this turned out to be pretty enjoyable!!

Delightful to look at. Living there ... hmmm ... I dunno?

Lots of history there, and the early settlers had to work really hard for everything they had.

I guess you could call it rustic....very nice pics

Interesting tour, and your best photography yet.

I'm probably one of a handful of New Jerseyites who has been to this town. Unfortunately I only got gas on the outskirts and didn't see much of downtown. Some surprisingly nice structures here.

Continued excellence in your series, KC.
