Love this tower.

Why can't we get anything like this in the US? :(

CastleScott Feb 7, 2018 9:49 PM

^ Because here in the US they seem to like to do things on the cheap..:(

I don't think it depends on the country or money, I think it's the architect. I'm sure buildings like this one will be in the US soon

Actually, construction costs are much higher here and there are more inspections to pass.

Spocket Jul 26, 2018 12:49 AM

You can't get that in the US because it's a mature market. China is building its office space now so there's plenty of demand. The US has been doing it for well over a century.

Also @CastleScott

You can't seriously be suggesting that the US does things cheaply compared to China, can you? If so then you're utterly ignorant of China.

Do you think that the stuff you buy (which is almost all entirely made in China in the first place) lasts a long time? No, we all know that it doesn't. Well, now imagine that you're in China where things are made even more cheaply for their domestic market. Nothing here lasts nearly as long as it would in the US. Things break simply because they've been waiting to do so. My old apartment had things that simply fell off. Things that don't simply fall off in the West. Like the paneling on my cupboards. Just fell off. No reason. Just got sick of being on my cupboards I guess.

In the Chinese market, people don't fix things because it's cheaper to buy new ones instead. I see abandoned highrises that in the West we'd guess were maybe 20 years old. Here things are broken down and look useless within 5 to 10 years. The new apartment I bought is actually 18 years old. If you were looking at it through Western eyes you'd have guessed the building was at least 50 or 60 years old based on the condition of the exterior. And not a well-kept 50 or 60 years either. Dirty, very poorly maintained, probably didn't meet code requirements when brand new. THAT'S China.

About the only place where some buildings are maintained is in the flagship cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou. As you get smaller it's like going back in time in terms of conditions and attitudes towards resources and maintenance.

So please, if you're going to say that the US does things cheaply then do it in a thread where we're discussing a place where they do things better.

Actually the specs for building codes in the region (China, Taiwan and Japan) are much higher due to the earthquake zones, bi-annual typhoons and seasonal floods (and 50 year mega-floods). In short the buildings there have to be over- engineered, but yeah labour, materials and middlemen are much cheaper - though catching up. China only has a specific window to build so freely before wages start to stifle the plans, and 'value-engineering' starts to raise its darling profile. You're already seeing more plain looking boxes going up in Beijing and Shanghai for a while now. It's the other cities that still have a modicum of free rein.

The White Magnolia Plaza was originally slated to be much wavier:

the design instead got recycled in the cheaper city of Nanchang

The architect is SOM. They're American; headquartered in Chicago.

This building is badass, really handsome and super futuristic. The scale of Chinese skyscrapers is mind-blowing too.

UTEPman Feb 20, 2019 11:50 PM

Man, China doesn't play around when it comes to lighting their buildings. Makes Vegas look conservative by comparison. Sick building, though
