Draft pics this Friday night!

Carry over from last thread. Oilers deal Jordan Eberle to Islanders for Ryan Strome. Good trade, Oilers need to desperately dump salary and a 1 for 1 trade with no salary retain is pretty good value.

Vegas loaded up with a ton of d men. I assume we'll see some of them moved for staggered 2018/2019 draft picks before the start of the season.

According to the rules, Vegas had to pick 14 forwards, 9 defensemen and three goalies.

https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-expansi...es/c-281010592

The way the rules were set up. Most teams opted to protect 7 forwards and 3 defensemen as opposed to 8 skaters. That results is a mediocre pool of forwards and a high amount of quality defensemen. Vegas can now trade these quality Ds for high ranking forwards.

IMO, the rule should have been that Vegas is stuck with its chosen roster for one year, seeing that they had the hands down best expansion draft options in the history of the NHL, or better yet, force them to pick an actual balance based on needs of an NHL team, that is 18 F-9 D-3 G. The way it was set up, they were allowed to select the balance of players from a pool of quality D-men to use as trade bait.

JHikka Jun 22, 2017 9:53 PM

Vegas already dealt two of those D-men anyway (TVR to Carolina and Schlemko to Montreal). It's likely Methot gets flipped to Dallas as well.

Calgarian Jun 22, 2017 10:05 PM

Sad the Flames lost Engelland to the GK, but it could have been worse.

Surprised about the Eberle - Strome trade, curious to see how that works out.

Quote from the NHL site on expansion rules;

* Vegas must select the following number of players at each position: 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.

How is that 30 players?

Here is a waaaaay too early prediction.
https://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2017/6/...guins-olympics

My next prediction: A Canadian team makes the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2011.

The Oilers and Maple Leafs have shown real promise as young, talented Canadian teams this past postseason. Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid drove their respective teams to levels of success not many predicted this year. It’s probably bold to say that one of these teams will make it, but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility here. Calgary might also be a team to watch next year, too, if they get a goaltender on the market in the offseason.

In any case, the Maple Leafs and Oilers are the blueprints of the NHL’s future. They’re coming to the Stanley Cup Final, sooner or later.

Relax everybody, as the guy states, it's a waay too early prediction.

It's one of those predictions that ends up with both teams missing the playoffs.

TorontoDrew Jun 23, 2017 5:18 PM

I never listen to predictions. It's just fun to read what some people think.

JHikka Jun 23, 2017 8:26 PM

Panarin to CBJ, Saad to CHI, Hjalmarsson to ARZ, Raanta & Stepan to ARZ. Crazy day and the draft hasn't even started yet.

Hopefully there'll be some trades left on the draft floor.

Hearing Bettman say "We have a trade to announce" gives me a boner.

Denscity Jun 23, 2017 11:23 PM

Nico first overall!

suburbanite Jun 24, 2017 2:01 AM

Pretty happy with the Leafs grabbing Liljegren at 17. He was the consensus #2 at the beginning of the year before getting mono. Hopefully he's fully recovered and regains his form because he could end up being a steal.

Calgarian Jun 26, 2017 4:50 PM

Flames are making great moves, I expect them to be one of the top teams in the west this year. Glad management is switching to "win it all" mode, hope the moves pay off!

I like the Hamonic signing (damn you Flames!), not a big fan of the Mike Smith trade however. Flames are going to have a rock solid defence this year, offence will probably be so-so again.

Smith should be an upgrade over Elliott still, but I think we could have done better. Defense is solid, just need a top line right winger and I think we're good!

Smith is an upgrade over Elliott. Hopefully he plays like it behind that very solid top 4 on Defense. I imagine the Oilers/Flames games this year are going to be great.

ExcaliburKid Jun 27, 2017 4:35 PM

Who's the Flames backup option if Smith goes down? He has a history of injuries, and with Johnson gone and Elliott not likely coming back, could be a sticky situation in net
