Very nice pics! I think downtown Fort Worth has one of the best concentrations of beautiful restored historic buildings in Texas, right behind San Antonio. This certainly adds to the city's charm IMO. In addition, downtown really has a very nice blend of these older buildings and the newer scrapers as well. :yes:

I will agree that Fort Worth has a nice downtown. It would fantastic if we could attract a downtown grocery store. I'm sure in time, that will happen.
In the fully built blocks, the alleys have been used to provide entrances to bars and clubs that either can't get access to the street or to put one directly across the street from a church, yet still meet the separation laws between entrances from churches and bars. |

Great shots and love that Fort Worth has kept so much of it's historic buildings. Nothing like them and can't replicate them, though the Bass family tries.

Yes, the Civil Courts Building is scheduled to be demolished soon, the Courthouse grounds will be restored, and the west portico of the Courthouse will be rebuilt. I can't wait.
This painted facade on the Civil Courts Building is actually a late 1980's remodel. Before it was re-facaded, it was a 1950's modern design with rotating louvers that sheilded the windows from the sun. It looked like a gigantic horizontal refrigerator! The interesting thing about the Civil Courts Building is that it was a late Wyatt C. Hedrick Building. Hedrick was the architect responsible for most of those beautiful Art Deco skyscrapers in the city. However, I noticed that you didn't show very many of those in your photos. |
Downtown Fort Worth is a breath of fresh air, its a cool place to visit. I think John R took Capt Awacs and I to this place when we met up. Different than mexican food in L.A., but still it was pretty good, probably TexMex.

Chris, thank you for you kind comments about Fort Worth. The restaurant where I took you and CaptAWACS was a few blocks away and its name is Mi Cocina. Yes, it is Tex-Mex, which is very different than the Mexican Food found in California. You probably remember Cabo Grande because I showed you the interior and told you that it was one of my projects a few years ago. The interesting thing about the restaurant is that my firm (Halbach-Dietz Architects) also designed the predecessor restaurant's space. However, that was before I became employed at my firm. When we did the Cabo Restaurant, Sundance Square asked us if we would be interested in gutting our previous design and designing a completely new Mexican Restaurant in its place. We said that we would gladly accept the job. The reason that I did not take you to Cabo is that the food is not as good as other Mexican Restaurants in downtown.

Thanks Johh for the correction, I'll have to remember Mi Cocina so when I visit again (hopefully in December) I make a trip over from Dallas to dine in Ft Worth.
I may not remember names, but I do remember certain landmarks. I guess thats why I thought the restaurant in the photo was the place we ate at. |
