WINNIPEG: Testing the new camera
Greetings, Y'all.
I recently got a new camera, and thought I would take it out around the downtown area to check out how the zoom works. I'm sure I didn't do the technology justice with my novice skills, but it was exciting for me to get out there anyways. Here's my tiny tour; hope you enjoy. Word. Let's start off with a shitty one: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7157/6...3f1cfe99_z.jpg St. Boniface, our French Quarter: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7168/6...a6ed0c28_z.jpg Red River: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7155/6...5294380a_b.jpg Red River Redux: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7143/6...a8ca1c6f_b.jpg Looking NorthWestish: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7150/6...75fac2bd_b.jpg Towards Main Street: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7165/6...1bc3b7e2_b.jpg Yep: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7158/6...b7ba8159_b.jpg Skating: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7152/6...621f2102_z.jpg Skating II: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7146/6...681502a0_z.jpg Panorama: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7011/6...fba4ccb8_b.jpg Downtown lookin' West: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7142/6...b0cd7621_b.jpg "Golly, Dave, that IS erect," she agreed: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7031/6...0c9871c2_z.jpg Ye Olde Building: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7171/6...225221d8_z.jpg Winnipeg's really coming into its own. Not unlike my priest: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7146/6...c8db27f8_b.jpg The ol' Red River: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7015/6...25c11956_b.jpg You can't have too many of these shots. Well, maybe you can. But I can't: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7146/6...c8db27f8_b.jpg Photography, while sexually stimulating, can also be very cold: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7015/6...25c11956_b.jpg Towards Portage and Main: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7034/6...e9d92830_z.jpg The Manitoba Hydro Building and her solar chimney: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7005/6...c01e006e_z.jpg Union Station in the foreground: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7022/6...15342d45_z.jpg The southern lil' bit of Downtown: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7149/6...f8f3ae44_z.jpg Yeah, yeah.... There's a lot of these pictures. But I stomped around with a sore back in the cold to snag some panoramas. Armed only with a camera, a blunt, and a wealth of self pity, this is what I reaped along my journey: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7145/6...d85eb522_b.jpg What's left of the St. Boniface cathedral after Hurricane Mulroney: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7022/6...cce82e35_z.jpg Front'n'Centre is our delightful Hotel Fort Garry: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7031/6...e2807bb4_b.jpg If I were rich and eccentric I would remove the lamp post simply to take this shot: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7019/6...ee224243_z.jpg St. Boniface Hospital, the area's second largest: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7018/6...01482561_z.jpg Old St. Boniface: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7005/6...47f3e4c6_b.jpg French Quarter Panorama: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7147/6...e8f7f903_b.jpg The Canadian Museum for Human Rights, otherwise known as the Expensive Building: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7166/6...58d55556_z.jpg Wacky: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7167/6...8463b993_b.jpg Obligatory shot from the Forks: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7027/6...7547abeb_b.jpg If you would like to learn more about possums, go to nationalgeographic.com: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7013/6...f2ca1d2b_b.jpg Main Street and St. Mary's Avenue, or Main & St. Mary's, as the locals know it: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7154/6...3d4306dd_b.jpg Portage Avenue: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7009/6...e70c99fb_b.jpg Not Portage Avenue: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7150/6...b736b788_z.jpg This concludes our splendid tour: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7155/6...e6cf035e_b.jpg Thanks ever so much for browsing this lil' set. I'm off like a prom dress. |

Thanks for the feedback, guys!
On a side note, I have enjoyed threads by both of you before; dig your work! |
More stompin' around....
It's the middle of winter, there's barely any snow, and the temperature is sittin' somewhere around 0 degrees C. Stellar conditions for hack photography in the world's 784th best city!
Uninspired squares: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7186/6...85306212_z.jpg The building on the right is a former 3 star-ish hotel now revamped into overpriced apartments: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7044/6...4fd908d474.jpg Wet'n'Dirty, not unlike a couple gals I met around the corner: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7041/6...fcc29179_z.jpg A pal from back home (used to working in the Calgary area) had a 6 month contract doing engineering work in Winnipeg. He was put up in one of the towers in the background during a particularly violent summer, and the first night in town witnessed a hammer attack, to be followed a couple nights later with people running down the street with machetes. He was moved to the suburbs shortly thereafter: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7199/6...b4dfb444_z.jpg Winnipeg is like a brilliant physicist hooked on glue; loads of potential just waiting for that divine slap in the face to wake up and turn everything around: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7204/6...1def50aa_z.jpg You're sure you wouldn't rather try the Best Western, Honey? http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7197/6...057d8c09_z.jpg The Manitoba Telecom Company, our local contribution to the Shaw/Telus/Rogers gangbang: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7067/6...4d3ddf71d9.jpg Sneakin' around the roof of our sad underground mall: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7039/6...fb6e30cb_z.jpg When approached by security and asked what you're "doing up there," don't reply "scuba diving." It confuses them: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7036/6...9edb689a_z.jpg Yep: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7039/6...9fc48d3c_z.jpg I'm assuming Andy6 is the twin on the left: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7210/6...cc34deb5_z.jpg A touch of art deco for y'all: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7051/6...0fdd9e02e8.jpg Window Dressing: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7195/6...f2f69edf_z.jpg Winnipeg in February. I was kinda hoping for varied bright colours on the balconies to give the structure some life, but the reflective metal is sorta cool too, I guess: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7070/6...00e56960_z.jpg The Paris Building, blown up to show a bit o' detail: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7036/6...ee518e5d_b.jpg Fuckin' rights: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7060/6...b35cf1e0_z.jpg A touch of Turin or something: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7036/6...5c60d12f_z.jpg Portage Avenue, named World's Best Avenue to be Named After a Portage: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7197/6...b7d6e77abe.jpg Far out: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7210/6...5127f21c_z.jpg Winnipeg Art Gallery, I believe the nation's 5th largest collection: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7193/6...a00fa40e_z.jpg I have yet to meet a racist zebra: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7190/6...4497132d_z.jpg Thus concludes our tour. Thanks for lookin' around my area during the filthiest time of year! |
Insg pictures. What's the story behind the cathedral?
|
In 1968 it was mostly destroyed by a fire; I have heard that arson was the cause. In 1972 the facade was kept intact, and a modern church / information centre was built within the former walls. Here's the wikipedia link to it:

That museum is a human rights violation. Yuck!
Always great to see Winnipeg. Thanks. |
Winnipeg really reminds me of a scandinavian or northwestern Russian city. Keep rocking it peg.
