How many states have you been to?

When I was a kid I was amazed that my dad had been to all 50 states. I've been working on it ever since and am at 41. Only 9 to go (AL, MS, LA, ND, MT, CO, NV, AK, HI)

My personal criteria for counting a state as "visited" involves at very least getting out of the car somewhere.

[I misspelled "states" in the poll header, so if a Mod could fix that for me, many thanks]

jimthemanincda Apr 11, 2011 7:29 PM

50 states and 26 countries

CassGilbert May 12, 2011 3:22 AM

11-15 states

volguus zildrohar May 12, 2011 3:57 AM

17 - it may be 18, it was an overnight trip and I can't remember if I actually touched North Carolina ever.

buildup May 19, 2011 1:30 AM

23 states and only 2 foreign countries.

photoLith May 19, 2011 1:37 AM

Ive bene to 36 states. Ive missed most of the east coast states minus NJ, NY, and NC. The rest I need to visit, than I will have seen almost all of em.

SteveD May 26, 2011 6:52 PM

I've been to 47. I have never been to N or S Dakota, or New Mexico.

It's been that way for about the last 15 years, for me.

DrumCorpsAlum Jun 1, 2011 7:05 AM

45. I lack the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. I'll try to knock those out by the end of June. I'll hop on Alaska airlines out of Seattle when I have some time off, and try to visit Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks, and hopefully a few cities far north. Other than that I'll have to jumpseat on Great Lakes for some of the others, and Allegiant out of Mesa-Gateway. It helps that I fly for free.

SouthSky Jun 10, 2011 2:38 AM

I've been to 35 states. I'm lacking:

Arkansas
Delaware
Idaho
Indiana
Iowa
Maine
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska
New Hampshire
Nevada
North Dakota
South Dakota
Vermont
West Virginia

I've only been to 9 countries.

philopdx Jun 23, 2011 2:26 AM

49, I lack just Hawaii. I got to travel extensively on business when I was in my 20's, and that helped tremendously. I also got to stay in different parts of the country for 3-4 weeks at a time, really picking up the nuances of the locality.

TommyCarcetti Jul 25, 2011 7:44 PM

1. Maryland (Born & Raised)
2. Delaware
3. Pennsylvania
4. Virginia

Blitz Aug 7, 2011 5:46 AM

I've been to 41!

Dalreg Oct 2, 2011 7:46 AM

One state, Alaska. Grew up 4 hour drive from the border, just never made it to the lower 48.... Living in Australia now so not likely I" will make it to any more anytime soon.

kcexpress69 Oct 21, 2011 2:25 AM

I'd been to all 48 contiguous states when I reached 16 years old. I'm now 42 years old. Alaska and Hawaii may not come for awhile!! As far as getting out of the car, I'm not sure about a few states. North Dakota, Delaware, and Rhode Island. I've been to NYC a few times, (I was born in Hackensack NJ) but I have never been in upstate New York. :(

diablo234 Oct 30, 2011 9:13 AM

It would be easier to list the states I have not been to yet.

1: Oklahoma
2. Alaska
3. Arkansas
4. Iowa
5. Nebraska
6. North Dakota
7. South Dakota
8. Montana
9. Hawaii

Centropolis Nov 27, 2011 4:24 AM

I basically haven't been to New England, plus Alaska and Hawaii, plus the far northern plains and far northern rockies.

glowrock Nov 28, 2011 2:10 PM

Never been to:

North Dakota
Wisconsin
Florida
Hawaii

Should probably be able to cross Wisconsin off my list in the next few months, maybe Florida as well. I think North Dakota and Hawaii are quite a ways down the road! :)

23 states. I thought that was a lot, but judging by the poll results, I guess that's pretty average.

And since some of us are counting countries... I've been to 6 (excluding my own). One day I won't be so freaking broke and I can start working on improving these numbers. :D

Not counting layovers..

Not counting layovers or just driving through the state, I count 21 states in which I've actually spent a day or two (or in some cases many, many more). I have heavily sampled the east coast and the midwest, and have been to California and Washington, but haven't been to most of the south or Southeast (except Texas and North Carolina), Hawaii, Alaska or the great plains. I really want to make it out to Yellowstone and the Rocky Mountains some day.

I've also been to two foreign countries (not counting a layover in Toronto).
