Bonus points for pics of any "mid-century"-style signs still in use (or modern facsimiles).

^^^ I've got a good one!

This neon sign here in Windsor was just refreshed recently and is now the first local sign to have the unique status as the only sign on the city's heritage register! It's from 1954! I grew up two blocks away from this plaza and sign and hold it close to my heart, as I have so many memories amazing growing up in the 60s and 70s, basically going there almost every day for candy and groceries with my mother once a week. It's got a very Vegas look to it, and I'm so happy that they saved it and refreshed it!

One of my favourite signs in Toronto has been missing for the past few years, but will apparently be back:

The El Mocambo sign was taken down due to disrepair after the venue closed and was sold, however the new owners intend to open this summer and at some point the sign will return. One would hope concurrently.

The current streetview sans sign but mentioning the lack thereof: https://goo.gl/maps/tJGDfaFttav

Most people on this forum don't need to see this sign in full to know what it is. Looking forward to seeing it refurbished and installed on Victoria street.

Also looking forward to the Sam's signs going up at Dundas Square.

Iconic!

To me, the three "great signs of Toronto (commercial category)" were always El Mocambo, Sam's, and Zanzibar. Not in the same league, but still very Toronto would be Fran's Restaurants.

EDIT: How could I forget Honest Ed's? Doh!

As a kid, this sign always let me know I was about to get a great sandwich and my second hand smoke fix.

Calgary has some great recently restored hotel signage in the East Village.

The Orpheum and Vogue signs are heritage protected, one assumes?

TorontoDrew Jun 16, 2017 3:29 PM

Yes.

I like how Edmonton has a Neon Sign Museum. I'd love ot see something like that in Toronto, though the area around Dundas Square is kind of turning into one with the Mirvish and Sam's Signs.

Taeolas Jun 16, 2017 4:10 PM

Fredericton has banned Neon signs from the downtown. Two signs were grandfathered in.

One was for George's Footwear:

https://www.ctvnews.ca/polopoly_fs/1..._620/image.jpg

When George's closed and the building renovated, the sign was taken down, so it is gone now. :(

The second is for Victory Meat Market, and is still active and in use to this day:

Love the Vancouver neon signs! Glad they were able to be preserved.

It would be pretty brilliant if more and more of these old signs come to YDS. Would probably look really cool mixed in with the LED boards. Shame Honest Ed's is tucked away around the corner.

Love this one in Montreal - the building too
