If Canadian cities had that same rate (within the city limits only), the number of murders for some of the large cities in a year would be:

Calgary - 680
Edmonton - 520
Hamilton - 315
Montreal - 960
Ottawa - 540
Quebec City - 310
Toronto - 1,590
Vancouver - 360
Winnipeg - 405

If Canadian cities had those kind of murder numbers (or anything close to it), most likely the 2006 Liberal attack ads would be right - the military would be patrolling our cities. Chiefs and mayors would be fired left right and centre.

That's actually pretty misleading. I'm not arguing that things aren't worse in the States but you're comparing the worst part of a city with Canadian metros. Your point still stands (as far as I'm concerned) but to be more accurate you need to compare like and like. St. Louis actually has nearly 3 million people in the greater metro. That doesn't mean their murder rate isn't incredible and that "guns don't kill people":uhh:, I'm just saying that it wouldn't be as bad as it seems based on the core city versus metro areas in Canada.

Kitchener had its second homicide of the year on Friday when a 33 year old man was shot and killed in a residential neighbourhood. The alleged perpetrator, a 29 year old man, was arrested on Saturday.

A man was found dead under a pickup truck with a long gun beside him in the northern part of the city. That pickup truck was see earlier in the day driving very fast and going through red lights on the northern part on the highway in the city.

This could be the first homicide for the Sault this year. I don't think we had a homicide last year in the city.
Will update when more details are released

According to the Journal de Montréal

Quote:

"Angelo D'Onofrio had no criminal record, but was well known by the Éclipse squad, who are the specialists in organized crime at the Montreal Police Service.

Ironically, the crime was commited while only a few kilometres from there, the relatives of the Montreal mafia godfather, Rocco Sollecito, were receiving condolences at the Loreto funeral complex."

Could be something's afoot in the local drug trade.

Toronto's homicides have slowed down a lot in the past month after a pretty bad start to the year, Toronto is still at 30.

Edmonton at 23

lubicon Jun 3, 2016 6:41 PM

Calgary now at 10.

Calgarian Jun 3, 2016 6:44 PM

Pretty quiet so far in Calgary, 10 homicides nearly half way through the year isn't bad at all.

More details are now known about that Montreal shooting.

Apparently, the guy who was killed wasn't the real target, he was just mistaken for another guy because both have distinctly white hair!

Allegedly, the target is a mafia old-timer named Tony Vanelli, a regular patron of the italian café where the shooting took happened.

The reason Vanelli wasn't at the café at the time of the shooting is because was at the funeral of Rocco Sollecito, the Montreal mafia head who was killed last week!

Toronto went two weeks without a homicide (although there were plenty of non fatal shootings and stabbings), until a fatal shooting today brings this year's total to 31.

The video shows that shooting to have been (another) targeted hit.

That video is from a different, non fatal shooting that happened before yesterday's fatal shooting.

Really? That's too misleading, even for the Toronto Star!

Last number I have seen for Winnipeg is 11. With summer around the corner that number could rise quickly unfortunately.

Urban recluse Jun 5, 2016 3:30 AM

Most likely.

jmt18325 Jun 5, 2016 6:07 AM

According to Crime Stat, Winnipeg is at 9 - down 31% from this time last year.

So does the infant's death count as a murder for Statistics Canada?
