I have'nt seen a thread of the moscow tower around SSP so, we should start one! :notacrook: the tower is supposed to be finished in 2010 with 125 floors construction is supposed to begin on June 12 2007.

I haven't seen a thread for this one either.

Anyhow I think this is a pretty sweet design and am extremely jealous that it is not proposed for Chicago! Besides, its about time that someone build something tall outside of North America and South-East Asia!

Foster is great isn't he...? This art deco inspired superscraper would almost fit in with the Midtown scrapers of Manhattan... to bad nobody has the inspiration to build anything remotely resembling a great structure like Moscow Tower in NYC anymore.

In my opinion if Moscow Tower gets built it will make the BD look like an antenna in the desert.

Moscow Tower and SWFC are my favs at the moment. :tup:

The difference is buildings in the west actually have to be profitable to be built. In China or Moscow or Dubai the government is whilling to take a loss just to get a trophy structure.

This type of a design would simply be too damn expensive for a mere tv tower. It would never pay itself off.

It's an amazing design. Best Foster's so far imo.
One thing I'm curious about is how transparent the crown will be.

This tower is very cool, very original too, unless you count that concrete mountain monstrosity in North Korea.

I hope it gets built.

Regarding the originality, you can't forget the reference to London's Shard of Glass, and, to a (much) lesser extent, San Francisco's Transamerica Pyramid.

The building is actually called Russia Tower, not Moscow Tower. Moscow Tower is a tower of City of Capitals complex.

beautiful tower. would be just one more of many reasons to go to russia if it gets built

1. Who says it is a mere tv tower? It is a mixed use building, not a tv tower.

2. In China and Russia the cost of land is lower than in most downtowns in the US. Moscow's IBC is essentially a redevelopment of a industrial brown field/commieblock district that has been an eyesore not that far from downtown, but not in the downtown at all.

3. Many other costs (labor and energy) are much lower in Russia and China than in the west (particularly labor in China and energy in Russia). Not sure about Dubai, but suspect it is also true for Dubai.

4. IBC towers are bulit by private investors. Yes, government-controlled companies (like Gasprom) do participate in these projects, so the government has some stake in this business, but none of the projects, to the best of my knowledge, is funded primarily by the government. Plus, you are probably wrong about projected losses - so far all indications are that IBC construction will be profitable.

Cheap labor and relatively nonexistent (or at least, barely enforced) labor laws helps immensely.

well. i think more. really, there is no necessary for 4 meters tall floors in hotel and apartments parts. i'm sure they going to downsize them a bit, so more floors could be fitted.

Do you mean to say that the plan is still not finalized ?

While you are correct that labour and land costs are cheaper in China, Russia, etc, the one question that hasn't been answered is how are the investors (may it be private equity or government) going to recover their costs? What are the lease rates and who is going to lease the building? Will the government subsidize the initial costs and/or finance the interest?

As far as I know Moscow has one of the highest lease rates of any city in the world these days, I think Class A office space is even more expensive than in Manhattan!
