Here is an old article...

Between The Bricks

By LOIS WEISS
November 9, 2005

Joseph Moinian is another West Side fan who is putting his money where his mouth is.

We hear Moinian contracted to buy yet another Verizon building on the east side of 11th Ave. opposite Javits.

This is one of the area's four super corners, where sources say he intends to construct a soaring, 1.5 million-foot mixed-use tower that will include retail, hotel, offices and residences.

The 47,000-foot site at 555 W. 34th St. is next door to his Infinity Court apartments.

David Noonan and Jimmy Kuhn of Newmark handled the brokerage, just as they did for Moinian's Verizon purchase on 11th Ave. between 42nd and 43rd Streets.

Moinian is working there on a design for another 1.5 million square footer, next to the Costas Kondylis-designed apartment building he bought as plans from Jules Demchik and which is currently rising skyward.

They look like they will complement one another very well. That will be one hell of a view down that street when they are done-talk about looking like a canyon!

:stunned:

This is 100% AMAZING!! The fact that it came out of nowhere made the surprise even better. Sherwood has a nice neighbor, thats for sure.

Once again:

Good news.

But considering the size and the location of this building couldn't they have come up with a more original design...something like the Chicago Spire or 80 South Street.

Dac150 Nov 1, 2007 1:11 AM

I think its very bold. It stands out, makes people on the street look up. I for one am not a fan of the CS design. This works well for my taste.

Those two will definitely compliment each other very well. I can't wait to see these projects move forward. :)

Supertall. *yawn*
Wait a minute, "supertall with No Spire !!!! :omg:"

Nice proposal.

Nowhereman1280 Nov 1, 2007 2:19 AM

I like it, it kinda reminds me of something Foster would design. It also has no spire, NY needs a supertall with no spire... Not saying that spires are inherrently bad, but a flat top is nice for a change.

cityguy Nov 1, 2007 2:24 AM

Very exciting project.

1,000 ft or more is fantastic for that site. It's also right next to Extell's potential 980 ft Convention Center hotel, not to mention the vast railyard development just to the south, which will also include 1,000 fters...

The stacking plan is a little confusing though...

Jularc Nov 1, 2007 3:04 AM

:) Also lets not forget about this 800 feet tower at 366 10th Avenue that is close by... Supertalls for NYC, keep them coming!

That's exactly right. The towers over the railyards will have to be tall to stand out from surrounding developments.

"HOLY.......FUCKING........SHITT!!!!!!!"

....that was my immediate reaction to this thread.

I just can't believe this. These are like the two (or three- I wanna see a better rendering of the 10th Avenue tower) most thrilling proposals I've seen in quite a while.

34th and 42nd are on their way to becoming the first two complete cross-town canyons (correct me if I left any out).

Awesome. This part of town will look great!

All those 3 projects in a vicinity, cool...What's the height of the square tower on the first render of post 4? Does it have a thread?

Wow, these are both really beautiful. Along with the NYTimes Building, BOA, TrumpSoHo, WilliamBeaverHouse, 7WTC, etc... NYC is collecting some VERY nice buildings. IMO, dispite some REALLY awful exceptions, most of what's going on in NYC is really nice... in fact, i'd even go as far to say that NYC is at the forefront of American Architecture right now.

*NYC is showing the rest of the world how to do glass skyscrapers the right way.*

Relationship of this tower with various westside developments:

All of those developments have their own threads.
