I dunno without the other buildings in the area shown, this model makes it seem a bit out of place.

theres many buildings that seem out of place in the west end - nelson and jervis has that new tower put in next to low rises

I think I like the revised verison better - it looks like a cleaner expression - i.e. sharper constrast between the solid facade with sliver windows and the all glass facade.
So it looks like the heritage house is a goner (or moved) and the tree is preserved - that gives the tower more breathing room. |
I can't believe this! The heritage house is sacrificed for the tree!!!? In the original plan both would've been retained except for the intransigence of the owner of the neighbouring house concerning the tree. Now that he is co-operating over that issue why did the developers feel the need to nix the house? The word 'removal' is too vague. If they are going to move it then be clear about that; otherwise I fear the worst. Why would the city, who work with the developer behind the scenes, even entertain this option to be presented to council and the public?
Retention of our manmade streetscape is vital in a city that has destroyed so much of it's heritage. Imagine moving a 100 year old Gastown building to build a new structure. There would be public outrage and municipal opposition. Preservation of our heritage streetscape is no less important than the natural one. And in this case that tulip tree was planted by a person, it wasn't there beforehand. So in a city 125 years old does the eco-green agenda supersede that of a house almost as old? |

wow, now this is one stupid proposal. Funny it's always the heritage houses being threatened with demolition and not the ugly 2-storey walk-ups (ie the green one northwest of the heritage house. That would have been the best location for the tower. The wall of garages is also awkward... one would think they'd bring the landscaping up to eliminate the wall on the front side.

Looks like they will be using the tree that they cut down to paste on the side and top of the building. The greenery looks terrible, if they leave it out then it will good.

now with this property, I do have some inside information on this.
- this new proposal is most likely going to be the last proposal the developer is going to try. After that, who knows? -the last proposal, Bing Thom was told by almost the entire council that it was going to be approved. -The developer wants to buy the two neighbouring properties. The green one was asking for way too much, and the other one was speaking nonsense. He was asking for half the density post completion. -The heritage house is costing way too much to maintain, the developer who bought this property years ago is losing money right now while renting out the 6 units there. -the developer wanted to save the house more than the tree, wants nothing more than to chop it off one night as it's really the source of all the problems with the permit going through. -The original plan was to save both the tree and the house, in return for a higher FSR, problem is, city didn't want to. -don't you love NIMBYism in the west end? |
