Those are amazing. Love the boom going on.

I like it. Bring it on!

Wouldn't mind adding a few hundred feet, though. A new tallest would be even better.

Count the Supertalls:

Despite all the doom and gloom I'm trying to remain optimistic about 175 Park and maybe if we're really lucky 350 Park and 2WTC.

Things will probably cool down quite a bit until the next cycle though.

Happy 2024

The Building Spree That Reshaped Manhattan’s Skyline? It’s Over.

New office buildings flourished over the past 25 years in Manhattan, but a construction drought has begun.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/28/n...ought-nyc.html

The Manhattan office construction boom is over.

Just three large office towers — of more than 500,000 square feet — are being built across New York City, with two expected to open in 2024 or 2025 and nothing else projected to go up for years. Normally, a handful of sites that size would be in various stages of construction, with at least one opening every year since 2018, according to JLL, a real estate services firm.

Nearly 20 large office buildings that developers have proposed, including the final tower near ground zero, have yet to break ground. Many are on indefinite hold as developers face numerous challenges.

As far as pointless superlatives go, I'm still holding out hope we'll soon reach the 30+ supertalls mark. We're actually pretty close, we just need a couple of stalled towers to resume and some of the proposals to start up.

Crawford Jan 2, 2024 11:55 PM

That NYT article is bizarre. I think the author should follow SSP, NY YIMBY, The Real Deal, and other sites.

They should have written that article around 4-5 years ago, when a bunch of supertalls were finishing up, and there were almost no serious new proposals. But there has basically been no building boom activity for years.

In the short term, we're actually much more likely to be on the cusp of a building boom. We're certainly due, given all the supertalls in planning.

Right, it was purely someone's speculation, but thought I'd share anyway.

Despite much empty office space most of it is old space undesirable to companies anyway. I'm guessing they didn't take that into account.

That article was sort of accurate, as far as new office space goes. There won't be major new office space coming online in the next few years. But as far as new building construction goes? That's something different. We already know that new skyscrapers will be rising. The skyscrapers that have been under construction are nearing completion. As anyone knows, that will only be followed by more construction. In other words, the perceived lack of new building is exactly why the new skyscrapers are on the way. Given the length of time it takes to get a skyscraper built, there was always going to be a little "cool off" period until the next giants can make their appearance. But that's far removed from the "end".

These buildings should disgust anyone who isn’t a multibillionaire. Perfect examples of the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few while more and more struggle in poverty. . But hey, generally bland buildings with no redeeming architectural features other than extreme height, so it’s all good, right?
