What are some cities either getting new transit systems or expansions? Doesn't have to be major cities. Including small or midsized cities as well.

That's cool Obadno! I saw a story in your city's newspaper about how the light rail system is expanding downtown and plans eventually to go to west Phoenix to hopefully alleviate some of the heavy traffic. Isn't there a line that goes out to Mesa?

The new expansions will turn it into 2 lines, an East-West and a North-South + The skytrain and the Tempe street car lines. And if future expansions take it up to Paradise Valley & Over to Glendale that will either add an additional east-west line or independent spur lines. Those expansions are many years off and have not been fully planned yet. |

San Francisco has 2 projects underway--actually past their original completion dates--and one in planning:
Central Subway/Muni T-line (light rail) phase 2 (under construction) https://socketsite.com/wp-content/up...oposed-Map.gif https://socketsite.com/archives/2012...north_bea.html Subway station under construction 9/19: https://i1.wp.com/sf.streetsblog.org...pg?w=800&ssl=1 https://sf.streetsblog.org/2019/09/1...subway-delays/ Van Ness (under construction) and Geary (planned) BRT projects: https://socketsite.com/wp-content/up...ry-BRT-Map.jpg https://socketsite.com/archives/2017...o-reality.html This gives an idea of what the BRT lines (this one on Van Ness Ave) will be like (and yes, the bus-only lanes actually will be painted red): https://socketsite.com/wp-content/up...-Rendering.jpg https://socketsite.com/archives/2017...k-to-2020.html Besides these 3 projects within the city, in the suburbs a major project is underway to extend the BART heavy subway/commuter rail system through San Jose so that there is transit pretty much circling the southern (south of SF) portion of San Francisco Bay (with an electrified CalTrain closing the SF to SJ gap on the western side of the Bay). https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/01/41/...7/5/1200x0.jpg https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/...d-13743030.php Phase 1 of the extention is nearly complete. Vancouver is extending the Millennium line as a subway down one of the cities busiest corridors.
It will be a 5.7 km extension and add 6 stations. Part of the line will continue above ground from the current terminus station of VCC Clarke and there will be one station just before it enters a tunnel and continues underground as a subway under broadway. Construction starts this year and should open in 2025. With this extension, there will be a major transfer point to the Canada Line making trips to the airport easier for many riders. https://engage.gov.bc.ca/app/uploads...0x627px_v5.jpg gov.bc.ca How the two trains will interact at Broadway/City Hall https://images.dailyhive.com/2019103...-rendering.jpg dailyhive.com example of one of the stations. There is talk that there will be a more significant tower than is shown. https://images.glaciermedia.ca/polop...velopments.jpg full info: https://engage.gov.bc.ca/broadwaysubway/ |

Montreal's new REM light electric rail is a 6.3 billion dollar project along a 42 mile long route (67 km). The system will cross three shores, and involve the restructuring of an existing North shore line into downtown, and construction of a new West Island line with a bifurcation allowing a subway line to the airport and a South Shore line.

London
The biggie is the new Crossrail/ Elizabeth Line (41 stations, 60 miles, $24 billion), which will be the new fast line that goes through the centre, and will see it swamped with over 200 million users a year when it opens, or about 600,000 users daily. http://74f85f59f39b887b696f-ab656259...-you-image.jpg the Northern Line Extension into the new skyscraper district at Vauxhall and Battersea https://tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/im...tober-2015.gif https://tfl.gov.u and the Croxley Rail Link https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...uexSTR.svg.png https://upload.wikimedia.org And Barking Riverside extension of the Overground (a network of tube like trains and frequencies but overground, not to be confused with the mainline train network in the city) https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog/wp-...tension-03.jpg www.ianvisits.co.uk/blog For the next decade there will be a Bakerloo line extension, finally serving South London (harder to tunnel through due to bedrock, they always relied on trainlines instead) https://assets.londonist.com/uploads...2017-large.jpg https://assets.londonist.com and possibly a new line from Euston to Canary Wharf. Then Crossrail 2, just as mammoth a task as Crossrail 1 https://assets.londonist.com/uploads...osed-route.jpg https://assets.londonist.com |
Portland is going to try brt again. Its bringing back articulated buses and is going to have a 15 mile "express" run down one of our busiest streets. I'd just call it accelerated instead. The higher capacity bus plus a few less stops will save commuters about 12 minutes if they do the whole route. It will have frequent service tho so there will be less waiting..

75 metropolitan area level crossing removal projects are happening, 32 have now been complete.
One example, the railway used to be where the park is now: https://i.imgur.com/QxZ5fdt.jpg?1 There's also a project to link the mainline through the inner/middle/outer south-eastern suburbs to the main inner/middle/outer northwestern rail line (Melbourne Metro project). https://i.imgur.com/WcfJ7nu.png We'll be getting a dedicated fleet that will operate that new linked line: We're getting an Airport rail Link at long last. We're also going to start to see the Suburban Rail Loop project kick off within a few years that runs through the middle ring of Melbourne's suburbs - mostly underground - and will be linking job centres small and large - all will be accompanied by structure planning to densify uses right across the metro area (resi/office/insto/commercial/other job space). First phase is Cheltenham to Box Hill. https://i.imgur.com/Dk3nzzN.jpg |
In addition to the REM ($6.4G), Montreal also has the Blue line extension, with 5 stations on 5.8 km. Start date of 2021 for a completion date of 2026:

Great stuff from all around the world!
