I haven't, either. Of course, when they're burning stuff in Mexico (trash, old crops, etc) each year, that does cause me minor problems. How much of the air quality problems people are talking about actually come from those activities in Mexico?

That is indeed a problem.

Here a few shots from this past weekend (3/29)

Love the glass

Somewhere like Houston, this might feel bland, but Austin has very few all glass towers and the quality of the material and touches like the metal dividers will make this a great addition to our skyline.

That glass is sweet.

Probably. Most towers like that aren't known for their pedestrian friendliness or having street level retail that connects the building to the city. Just look at that tower that Midland isn't getting, I say isn't because apparently they're chopping it in two, but it was surrounded by a large plaza. It's not 1985 anymore.

I'm not so old that I don't enjoy a nice piece of glass...but in this case I don't want to see what's behind it, like the parking portion of the building. I was hoping the glass would be a bit more reflective.

Yeah...I noticed that as well. It's like Grandma wearing a see-through dress.:haha:

That's a cool picture. I like that angle. But I can't take my eyes off of the JW Marriott. What a sexy building that's shaping up to be. I can't wait to see it all lit up.

EMS: Man crushed by elevator in critical condition

Austin-Travis County EMS medics are at the scene of a downtown construction site where they say a man was crushed by an elevator.

The man was pinned around 10 a.m. by an elevator at the 300 block of Congress Avenue, where the Colorado Tower is being built, but has since been freed, said EMS Cmdr. Mike Benavides.
Hope this doesn't shut the entire site down :(

********AND......we hope the man will be ok.!
I sent a text to my buddy who is working in this tower. I'm waiting for a more detailed reply. I got a one word answer so far..."Tragic".
As far as whether or not this shuts down construction....seems like a heartless and irrevelavant statement to make at this point, especially to the victim and his family. Come on...we're better than that!

lzppjb Apr 9, 2014 7:19 PM

Our first concern is with the man in the accident. Hopefully he can recover.

migol24 Apr 9, 2014 8:14 PM

What a terrible accident. I'm hoping for the best outcome possible for the man and his family.

MightyYoda Apr 9, 2014 10:36 PM

That is not a good sign if the only response was tragic. I hope he is ok and able to recover.

KVUE had more on the man's injuries.

Man injured after being pinned by elevator

Quote:

The man was working in an elevator shaft on the eighth floor of a building under construction when the elevator was activated. His head was pinned between a slab of concrete and the elevator.
I was across the street at Compass Bank at 301 Congress around 12:30. The ambulance had already left, but there were still several police cars and lots of construction workers milling about on Congress.

I hope the injured worker is able to recover.

Got an update a few minutes ago from my buddy about the accident at the Colorado. He couldn't discuss the particulars, especially since he knows I would blab it here, and there is an investigation going on. What he could tell me is that they freed the guy before emergency personnel arrived, his head took the brunt of it, and he was "missing a lot of his face". He said he thinks he still alive but really messed up.
He couldn't comment on what the guy was doing in a working elevator shaft in the first place.
Dangerous business. They did send him home early today, a bit shook up, as is his wife.

JoninATX Apr 10, 2014 4:55 AM

Crazy stuff. My thoughts and prayers are with this guy, and hope he recovers. But it does seem strange that something like this could happen. Those construction elevators are loud and you can hear it when it goes up or down.

That was nice of them to send him home early without his whole face.

MightyYoda Apr 10, 2014 4:04 PM

That is really awful. Prayers go out to his family.
