if there is a city resembling ancient rome it is london. better yet, london in 1890. dc is not crowded and ancient enough.

Thanks! Yes, not all are marble, that was actually a reference for the Supreme Court building, which is probably my favorite in Washington. Regardless, I don't believe there's a city that has so many architectural references on such a grand scale to the Greco-Roman legacy, which, of course, was intentional.

I see, you're talking about the people factor... I was merely noting the architectural Greco-Roman references that many huge federal buildings in Washington exhibit. I've been to London and can't say that I saw many such buildings, the late 18th and early to mid 19th century buildings seem to dominate there. Though one would be correct in pointing out that this is precisely when Neoclassicism was born, there aren't that many distinct examples on grand scale that would match Washington's.

kool maudit, rome wasnt orderly? what part of roman history did you study. greek cities were known not to have been orderly, but roman. lmfao, re-read roman history, roman cities were so orderly they were dublicated across the roman empire.

Very nice building indeed. These buildings in D.C. give off the vibe that they're there to last thousands of years (though they won't, in all likelihood). And to think that I didn't even capture all of the monumental buildings in the city, in this photo thread, there are more. Of course Washington isn't just these federal buildings, the mansions and rowhouses are quite impressive as well, in other parts of the city. |
