Beautiful place! Looking forward to many more pics.

Thanks for sharing, love the Mediterranean feeling and the priceless Italian classic architecture.
Little known fact: the Americans first and the French second are the biggest fans of pizza in the world, while Italy provides the tastiest I've ever eaten. You'll be amazed and proud of your origins if you tour the country, it's amazingly pretty and picturesque, with tons of unique medieval and Renaissance sites, enjoying a warm Mediterranean weather. It would be perfect without the mafia businesses in the south. |
Nice! It seems like Palermo is somewhat off the tourist radar (at least compared to better-known destinations), which makes it especially interesting to me.

|
Solid tour. I'd love to get over there one day. Are the photos small by choice or did you fall victim to quickrpickr getting rid of the large size?

Yeah, I'm jealous, but thanks for showing me a place I'm sure I'll never see in person. (Looks like a hell of a lot of fun)
............Damn I'm hungry! |
Don't you love your cubicle?! :P
In picture 52, is that a snow covered mountain range in the background, or is it just clouds? If it's mountains, what mountains are they? :) |
I saw the mountains too, and was intrigued. They have snow down there? Or is that on the mainland/continental Italy?
|
Amazing photos of an amazing place. Nice set.
|
Diggin' it.
|
Southern Europe got a couple of good cold snaps this winter, snow in Rome so I'm not surprised to see some of the higher peaks snow capped. Palermo looks a lot larger than I had imagined it. The pic from high in the hills looking down on the city makes it look pretty huge actually.

Thanks for the great tour. Character all around.

great photos!I'm Italian,i live in Genova(Genoa).
Italy is a great place to live except for the mafia(not everywhere). |

The bridge on the straits of Messina isn't only to launder money...yes every firm must pay Mafia, but Sicily needs the bridge. The difference beetwen Canada and Italy is that the Canada tries to stop mafia Instead in Italy mafia is normality (or almost, especially in the south). Remember the Mafia is made by people(not only killers),also accept a bribe is mafia. Sorry if I Do spelling errors but I'm only 16 |

Yes, many major cities in North America have mafia in some proportion. Montreal's mafia like New York, Chicago , New Orleans dates back to the 19th century and is a bit different in that it has a history of Calabrian and Sicilian infighting to establish supremacy. The head of the Bonnano clan in New York was Montreal born but grew up in Sicily then in NYC. He was extradited to Canada because he wasnt american. He came here a couple of years ago and started eliminating the top of the Rizzuto clan while Vito was in prison in the US. But he and a couple of his acolytes were murdered in retaliation so nobody knows if Vito will survive and reorganize the clan. |
Beilissimo!

wonderfully portrayed. Southern Italia/Sicilia is on my list.

Thank you for the comments everyone! They are much appreciated.
I was hoping to make a thread of the road trip through the countryside all the way to Agrigento, but I didn't get that many shots. Quite honestly, the drive was just too much damn fun to stop (along with meeting cousins in a couple of different villages). After driving out of my great-grandparents' ancestral village, though, I stopped the car on top of a nearby hill. The beauty of the landscape in this area was just too gorgeous to not sit back and enjoy. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7125/7...61f129ca_b.jpg |
Nice photos. Palermo seems a bit rough, but it is good that it is less touristy.
|
Fantastic-looking place! The city's shabby appearance, coupled with the relatively dark/tanned skin of the locals, make the city look even more South American/Middle Eastern/North African than I had thought.
|
a city we don't see too often.
