Well you did it again Thundertubs. With the right music and the right city you produced another perfect thread.

Probably my favorite Newark thread ever. Some of those blocks are downright charming. Newark is built right, and the plethora of old signs only adds to its gritty appeal.

built right. Unfortunately practically all its charming brick row home/tenement neighborhoods have been demolished. All that's left are a few isolated strips in and around downtown near the broad street station and lincoln park. There's very little left worth raving about in other areas of newark besides the charming homes in the north ward. I think that's the reason why Newark hasn't been able to gentrify the way Jersey City and some areas of Brooklyn have. It lacks a largely intact architecturally rich charming district worth gentrifying! The Iron bound is great but it's no Bed Stuy or Historic Old Jersey city.

Newark can still pull through if it develops around the few beauties it has left. The teachers village development is a step in the right direction. Besides it also has it's own subway, how many cities in it's category can say that? :P Wonderfully done Thundertubs.

Nice pictures. I like how you captured the detail on a couple places. Is that an Egyptian woman talking on the phone?

I was in dire need of a dose of raw urbanity. Thank you!

I enjoyed this. There is a lot of nice bones under all that grit. And I didn't know Newark had its own subway. Thanks for sharing!

Downtown Newark has to be one of the American downtowns most ravaged by tacky and misguided Modernist renovations and/or ground-level additions. That said, Newark has some delectable Art-Deco..hopefully those gorgeous old towers will receive some TLC. Good showing, Tubs!

No way, had no idea that Newark had it's own subway.

That's an old telephone exchange building. It had some cool engravings of people on old phones.

ive never heard of this town before but it looks very desolate,shabby and rundown but clearly has some wonderful art deco buildings.Can anybody tell me a bit about its history?

Nice. But instead of taking pics of the rundown pieces of crap that makes the city worse than it actually is, why not take pics of say the Prudential Center? How about NJPAC? The Marriott under construction on Broad St? The Gateway Complex? The new college housing already up near NJIT and Rutgers? The new Baxter Park development going up(you were basically there at the old Baxter Terrace projects)? You know, more modern stuff instead of the ghetto crap.

Yeah what's the deal Tubs? :D

To the poster, many on here feel there is value in those photographs of those particular places when in the right sort of clear eyed context, like how I feel all of Thundertubs photoposts are. I can also understand how a resident of Newark might feel, but I feel like there's kind of an art to photographing a particular feel or vibe; what is.
