Paris: le anti-tourist way

First, I have to say: what a blessing in disguise for my hotel to be located in the Paris suburbs. Utilitarian, noisy, chaotic, ethnically diverse, lively, crowded, fugly, awesome cuisine... yeah.. For those who had the misfortune of only seeing the 19th century Paris core, go back. Check out the suburbs and surround yourself within 21st century contemporary France.

très jolie comme ville :D

Fascinating stuff. Until the last half or so, it looked nothing like the Paris I remember. Even then, a lot has changed since I've been there.

Centropolis May 1, 2012 11:42 PM

Fantastic angle to the whole thing! Asymetricalish.

ColDayMan May 2, 2012 3:22 AM

Diggin'.

Yankee May 2, 2012 8:13 AM

Beautiful city, beautiful shots, thank you so much for the tour!

I don't know, maybe I'm immature but I can't look at this and not giggle:

I really like seeing this version of Paris.

ChrisLA May 2, 2012 10:07 PM

Awesome photos of Paris, it looks like some of the areas around the city I visited. It's cool to see part of the city many tourist tend to avoid, thanks for sharing.

MolsonExport May 3, 2012 1:00 AM

the good, the bad, the ugly. I enjoyed the gritty tour. I saw much of the grittier side of Paris during my last three visits (in addition to the usual touristy areas), but never made it to La Defense (nobody goes to Paris simply to visit skyscrapers).

Minato Ku May 3, 2012 2:15 AM

:previous: Surprisingly there are quite many tourists in La Défense.

Wich Paris suburb ? Because outside la Défense there isn't any pics outside inner Paris.

ChiTownCity May 3, 2012 3:30 AM

Great tour!!! I enjoyed this set so much! I love that feeling I get when I see new juxtapositions and compositions in familiar places. It makes me want to pack all my bags and take the next plane to that spot.

Private Dick May 3, 2012 5:01 AM

Cool. I wanna go.

MolsonExport May 3, 2012 12:30 PM

I recognized Montmartre and the other touristy arrondissements, and the non-touristy 10ieme arrondissement, 15ieme arrondissement, etc.

Never mind. There are more pictures of the 19th arrondissement than usual, along the avenue de Flandre which is an inner suburb like district outside the historic core indeed, even though it's part of central Paris. Right from the 1st picture, we're around the Riquet/Crimée neighborhood, I think. He may have stayed in that area.

giovanni sasso May 3, 2012 4:39 PM

attaboy empty hq, you really got r dun. i like the thumb and second-to-last photos too.

fern May 3, 2012 5:33 PM

Indeed you are correct. The first 21 pictures were taken in the Crimée/Riquet area. It seems I found myself more fascinated with this area than the historic core. The hotel I stayed at was on Rue de Crimée just northeast of the Crimée metro station. I'd love to stay in the 19th arrondissement again.

While I was technically in the city core, the elements that made up the neighborhood were the same elements I and many others identify with the Paris suburbs. In contrast to Crimée; Les Halles, St. Michel-Notre Dame, Charles de Gaulle Etoile among other places deep in the core felt like a different city. But now I know better and will be sure to venture further out next time I'm in Paris :)

btw some of the other places seen on this thread include Javel, Pigalle, Stalingrad, and Gare du Nord.

M II A II R II K May 4, 2012 4:09 PM

Now that's urbanism.

MolsonExport May 4, 2012 6:08 PM

Good ol Gare du Nord. Fuck that place is busy.
