Asia's first hybrid electric ferry is launched

Kaohsiung Government has retrofitted a ferry with a Visedo electric propulsion system – making it the first hybrid electric ferry in Asia

Asia’s first hybrid electric ferry has been launched after the Taiwan city of Kaohsiung retrofitted its Cijian Island passenger ferry – with plans to potentially adapt the rest of its fleet too.

Kaohsiung recently retrofitted the ferry with a Visedo electric propulsion system, replacing the original diesel engine. If successful, the Kaohsiung City Government plans to retrofit the rest of its diesel fleet to help reduce pollution levels around Taiwan’s largest harbour.

Visedo OY, a leading Finnish manufacturer of electric drivetrains for marine vessels, commercial vehicles and heavy duty applications, worked alongside Taiwan’s Ship and Ocean Industries R&D Center, also known as SOIC, to complete the retrofit.

Visedo chief executive Kimmo Rauma said: “Given the geography, ferries are a vital mode of public transport across east and South East Asia but they are also the most energy intensive per kilometre travelled. Until now, diesel ferries have been a dirty but necessary part of life around harbours like Kaohsiung.

“Visedo has developed a cost-effective and efficient alternative, so rather than waiting until a vessel’s service life ends, harbour cities can swap noisy, dirty and expensive diesel for silent electric powertrains that are more efficient, can halve fuel costs and emit no fumes or oil pollution.”

Kaohsiung’s new ‘e-ferry’, Ferry Happiness, will halve daily fuel consumption while transporting 15,000 passengers every day to Cijian Island.

Visedo said it was estimated that the electric propulsion will save more than 25,000 litres of fuel every year.

Visedo retrofitted the 100-tonne, 23m-long vessel with an electric system to replace the original 300HP diesel engine. The powertrain was designed to ensure pure electric cruising for half the ferry’s operation time and, with fast shore charging, this pure electric percentage can be higher.

Head of SOIC’s system development ChihHung Lin said: “…the Kaoshiung City Government is committed to cleaning up its fleet and is currently considering the possibility of replacing all 11 of its vessels with this new type of e-ferry. This also includes embarking on a hybrid tug-boat project.”

Strong Trend on Emissions Reduction Efforts Behind Growing Interest in E-Ferries and Hybrids: Cavotec

"We're seeing growing interest in plug-in and charging technologies for e-ferries and hybrids in Asia and beyond"

Increasing efforts to reduce shipping emissions is driving a growing interest in e-ferries and hybrid vessels, according to engineering firm Cavotec

The comments came alongside the firm's announcement that its charging technologies have now connected Asia's first e-ferry to electrical power.

The retrofitted passenger ferry, which operates between the island of Cijian and the port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and that entered service last year, is fully electrically powered. This follows the introduction of a hybrid ferry earlier in 2017.

"Cavotec has supplied a charging solution to ensure safe, fast and efficient connection of the ferry to electrical power at the Kaohsiung berth. The solution includes a cable reel, cable and plug, and a socket box onboard the ferry," the company said.

The Kaohsiung city municipality in understood to also be planning to retrofit the rest of its diesel fleet as part of emissions reduction efforts.

"We're seeing growing interest in plug-in and charging technologies for e-ferries and hybrids in Asia and beyond, together with a high demand for our shore power equipment at major ports, which clearly indicates a strong trend on emissions reduction initiatives," said Gustavo Miller, President of Cavotec's Ports & Maritime division.

Historically, shore power solutions have been less popular in Asia compared to other parts of the world, with a study in 2015 noting that out of the 60 cruise terminals in the Asia Pacific region, only five ports were considering on-shore power supply in the coming five to 10 years.

The first brand-new electric ferry in Asia entered service in Taiwan’s southwestern port city of Kaohsiung on Monday, and authorities estimated that the zero emission ferry will reduce carbon emissions by 170,000 kilograms a year.

The ferry, which is painted light green with black bear prints, will sail between Cijin (旗津) and Gushan (鼓山). The electric ferry generates no diesel exhaust odor, and its motors make no noise.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊) and Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) Minister Lee Ying-yuan (李應元) jointly presided over Monday’s ceremony to commission the electric ferry.

Chen said the electric ferry is estimated to save about 65,000 liters of diesel and reduce 170,000 kilograms of carbon emissions a year.

Lee said the EPA gave a subsidy of NT$100 million to Kaohsiung to build the electric ferries and the fast charging stations on the shore, adding that another electric ferry is scheduled to join the service at the end of this year.

The newly commissioned electric ferry is 25.2 meters long and capable of carrying 150 passengers and 46 scooters. The ferry has 80 batteries and can sail nonstop for four hours, with the maximum speed of 9 knots and average cruising speed of 6 knots.
