Belgrade, Serbia: City Overview
Located at the confluence of the Sava River with the Danube and on the border of the Pannonian Plain with the Balkan Peninsula, Belgrade extends over an area of 3,222.68 km², which occupies 3.6% of the territory of the Republic. The metropolitan area is home to a population of 1,756,534 inhabitants, which represents 21% of the Serbian population, making it also the fourth most populous city in southeastern Europe, after Istanbul, Athens and Bucharest. As the capital of Serbia, Belgrade is home to the main state agencies and institutions, as well as the most important universities and research establishments. It is also the economic engine of the country, with a unique agricultural sector, and the main center for the dissemination of Serbian culture. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with a history that goes back almost 7,000 years, often in turmoil, as it was the scene of clashes between the powers that successively dominated the region. The first settlements appeared with the prehistoric Vinča culture around 4800 BC. C. In the III century a. C. the Celts settled, and later, the Romans founded the city of Singidunum. of the Despotate of Serbia. Belgrade, Serbia: Belgrade Fortress (Kalemegdan)
The Belgrade Fortress, consists of the old citadel (Upper and Lower Town) and Kalemegdan Park on the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, in an urban area of modern Belgrade, Serbia. Located in Belgrade's municipality of Stari Grad, the fortress constitutes the specific historical core of the city. As one of the most important representatives of Belgrade's cultural heritage, it was originally protected right after World War II, among the first officially declared cultural monuments in Serbia. It is the most visited tourist attraction in Belgrade, with Skadarlija being the second. Incredible, you did Belgrade right. Really dig the vibe, the array of different cultural influences represented in the architecture is staggering. The multitude it’s expected for a Balkans city though Belgrade being a major capital there’s special grandeur to it. Bucharest has a similar sort of flavor with Ottoman, Russian, French & art deco to be found in its pre & inter war stock.
I’m not arrogant enough to think I’m the first to notice the similarities had as they came into the modern era but it’s an interesting perspective to take on. The socialist period took the cities in diverging directions where Belgrade was much more open than any other eastern bloc city where as the post modern era has been difficult for it. Yet because its experience I believe it’s much easier to appreciate what the city it’s an undoubtedly cool place no arguments but I get the feeling it’s more than it seems at first glance. Partly I’d put it on an abundance of overt uniqueness to its Cold War era style that’s either absent or hidden to a greater degree in other former socialist bloc cities. Great history as well as modern art scene, don’t want to downplay its own distinctive style & heritage while discussing all of the interplay between different influences. Had to look up the connection to the Transylvanian Saxons when I saw the German style manor in the fortress. Also got to say I really dig the some of the art that’s coming out of the Institut français de Serbie, French influenced Serbian art badass. |
Indeed, it has a great capital vibe with its own personality, though the wounds from the war are still visible (at least when I went in 2018). Would like to go to the countryside next time and get to know the serbian culture even more

Belgrade, Serbia: St. Mark's Church
The St. Mark's Church is located in the Tašmajdan park, near the Parliament of Serbia. It was built in the Serbo-Byzantine style by the Krstić brothers, completed in 1940, on the site of a previous church dating to 1835.
