IS there anything fun happening for NYE in this city?
 

No? Oh okay, just making sure.

I dunno if there is or isn't. Was trying to get together with Metro. Just waiting for him to give me a firm location and time. If anyone wants to do a group get-together and knows where something interesting is going on, that'd be cool.

it's the day when you get to watch on the news all day taipei, auckland, hong kong, syndney, moscow, paris etc etc explode with fireworks and big showy displays only to look forward to absolutely nothing to do in this so called world class city

Yeah the problem is there is nothing special happening here on this special night. On top of this you pay threw your nose for some crap food, crap beer, and a overcrowded crap bar/club with rules and bi laws strictly enforced to guarantee a crappy and unspectacular night. Personally I would pay to not have to put my self through this.

What I would recommend to everyone here is to stay home, be with family, have a small house party with friends and save you time money and sanity. You can go out and have a much better time pretty much any other weekend of the year.

Also I have never seen a city anywhere like Vancouver without any major special public events that are worth peoples time to get out to. Its kind of sad because im stuck out here this year while everyone else outside of here has all these spectacular public events to attend that I would kill to be able to be a part of.

Ill still have a good time, just the "good time" will be exactly the same like any other good time on any other weekend.

CTV news at noon was ripping the City for having absolutely no public events counting down to midnight. Robson Square shuts down at 10:30 PM. Outside of a private party or a pub/club something, there's nothing else.

But to be honest, I'd still partially blame last year's riot for the reason there is nothing going on in Vancouver.

^Every city has riots and it I don't remember things being ever any different here before the small show of public disobedience.

A bunch of people at home on the internet bitching about the "no fun city". Oh the irony.

We're bitching at home because if we try to do anything fun the police will stop us or people start complaining.

Ever since a bunch of idiots ruined First Night, there hasn't been anything big and organized in Vancouver. For years now. I don't even know if Surrey does a First Night anymore..

I liked it when Science World was turned into a NYE destination.. but no one seems to have run with that one this year.

Oh my....wish I saw this thread earlier.

I was with my family for New Years and the TV was on. I asked them to change the channel to King5 (Seattle) so we can watch the countdown coverage on the Space Needle.

They asked how come we couldn't watch the one in Vancouver, and I told them there isn't any. After I explained to them there never was one in Vancouver as far as I know (I only vaguely recalled the First Night, but was only aware of the Surrey one), they wouldn't believe me....

I think I'll show them this thread.

There actually was a small countdown at 9 o'clock at Robson Square that I went to but that was about it. It was for families and such. There was skating and a live DJ and.... that's about it.

Paris actually doesn't do fireworks on New Years anymore. Just a small nitpick there :p

Science World had a ticketed event this year...

There seemed to be even more events then normal this year. Every hotel seemed to have an event as well as most of the higher end restaurants then there are the pubs/clubs. Think the market is filling the void. Perhaps one day we'll see a public event but outside the Olympics the city doesn't seem to know how to organize things, I guess even during the games it wasn't really the city organizing anything. There were fireworks put on by Edgewater Casino. :tup:

For the first time ever I went to one of those NYE club events. Entrance was $50 and it basically felt like any other night. Apart from a tiny amount of cheap champagne and the band taking a break at midnight to say its new years...that was it.
The only saving grace was that I was with friends, so it at least turned into a decent regular night out.

Yeah I know it just sold out and is one of the largest events for NYE in the city. It was on the radio, on blogs, on social media. How did you not here about it?

I think the city does well at organizing the fireworks, however, brand.Live organizes it now. The city really sucked the big one with the Jazz Fest and other fests though. The city in general needs more events and NYE should be first on the list. The tree lighting ceremony at Jack Poole Plaza needs more pizazz as well. I think if they could shell out 100,000 to bring in a decent music artist, that would be a start.

they've been having those parties for years - i remember back in the 90's all the hotels had big parties - clubs would charge triple the cover of a normal night for the exact same thing - so we would go to a house party till about 1 or 2 when the clubs dropped cover and finish the night at a club
