University of Lethbridge
The University of Lethbridge has chosen a site for the Destination Project. Exciting things are around the corner I think.

As an alumnus of UofL, I'm quite excited about this project. While I didn't take any science classes, I did feel that the CCBN and Water Research Building were disconnected from the rest of the campus. This new building will help to bridge the research buildings to the rest of the campus.
My wish for a future project would be to build underground or above ground parkades on the site of the west lot. That sea of parking that is the west lot is such a terrible first impression into the campus. |

IIRC, the research buildings to the north were only the beginning of a planned larger research park. |

Nice to see this moving forward!

Another article from the Lethbridge Herald. Almost a month old now but I didn't see this one before. No pictures yet but more hints on the scope of the project.

Apparently, the CCBN will be moving its functions into the new complex and their old building will be repurposed. The spaces freed up in UHall will also get repurposed. Perhaps more single first year student dorm rooms?

There's a bit more to look at now:
http://www.uleth.ca/unews/article/th...g#.VCMIhOd94yJ With a few options: http://www.uleth.ca/unews/sites/defa.../TheStreet.jpg http://www.uleth.ca/unews/sites/defa...s/TheCourt.jpg http://www.uleth.ca/unews/sites/defa...les/TheHub.jpg and a slide show presentation: http://www.uleth.ca/featured-project...esentation.php |
I thought that the footprint of the new building was going to be much larger and connect the north entrance of UHall in the east to the Prairie Quad in the west. I'm disappointed that this doesn't seem to be the case.

They have selected the design called "The Hub" as the winner of the competition for the new Science and Academic Building and are looking to start construction next year! :) It'll probably be the biggest single building on the campus, so it's a pretty big deal.
This is the one they chose: http://www.uleth.ca/unews/sites/defa...b-Scenic_0.jpg http://www.uleth.ca/unews/sites/defa...s/TheHub_1.jpg http://www.uleth.ca/unews/article/un...g#.VROvmvnF93s According to the "Destination Project" website, interior design work is underway... http://www.destinationproject.ca/ |
I went to this university as well. Nice to see quality buildings being added!

Looks awesome!

Since there's no Lethbridge thread.... here you go!
Here's an older update but a beautiful photo of the construction of the University of Lethbridge Science and Academic Building from last year! http://www.destinationproject.ca/fil...-Project-2.jpg http://www.destinationproject.ca/201...-construction/ Lethbridge Transit's new transit terminal and park n ride is nearing completion in the middle of the city's downtown core. The building will also house the Southern Alberta offices and terminal facilities for Red Arrow, which is now the only intercity bus service in Alberta. https://media.globalnews.ca/videosta...7345347560.jpg https://globalnews.ca/video/4613239/...-2019#autoplay |

I never realized how beautiful Lethbridge was. I just googled some pics and was quite impressed. |
Thread is a bit old but it looked like Chad wanted to provide an update. So here we go.

Here are some updates from October 2018, and apparently there's been significant progress since. According to their site, the project is 92% complete as of February. It's very cool how much this project will improve the connectivity of the campus.
http://www.destinationproject.ca/news-updates/ http://www.destinationproject.ca/fil...29-2018-17.jpg http://www.destinationproject.ca/fil...-29-2018-8.jpg http://www.destinationproject.ca/fil...-29-2018-2.jpg http://www.destinationproject.ca/fil...29-2018-10.jpg I believe the next major new building planned for the campus is the bridge residence building. It'll be similar in form to University Hall, but it'll be more of a bridge and have less of an impact on the coulee. It will provide a direct, indoor link between the student residence village and the sports fields to the school buildings. http://mtarch.com/wp-content/uploads...02-640x427.jpg Here is the University of Lethbridge Campus Masterplan : http://www.uleth.ca/sites/default/fi...lan-2012_0.pdf Quote:

Sorry to hear you went through that though, the 90s and earlier seem like they were like that for pretty much everyone, especially in that age range (college-age). Growing up openly gay in Woodstock Ontario coming out in 2005 (age 14) I was threatened and beaten regularly for it, so I get that fear you must have felt. It was just sorta like that everywhere. Of course things would have changed since then though, we've had nationwide marriage equality for 14 years now, and even with Alberta having the lowest support among provinces, popular support for marriage equality is still around 75%. Lethbridge is really socially liberal by any measure, let alone just the prairies :P Lethbridge even does the Rainbow Crosswalk thing every summer now, and their Pride Festival is celebrating its 12th year this year. |
Haven’t heard much lately about the impending final construction and opening of the new Science Building. Does anyone have any information on when it will be open (and will there be a public open house tour before it opens for students and faculty)?
|
It will open in time for the fall 2019 intake. A public open house should occur somewhere in the summer time as the months leading up to it, the project is undergoing various testing and calibration of the specialized equipments and programming within as well as a lot of deficiencies to fix up.
|
As an alumnus, I hope to get down there and check it out before normally restricted areas become off limits to the general public.
