Nice pictures! Thanks for sharing.

Atlanta is a nice city. I like your aerial views of the city.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

so strange. it's like a chunk of downtown philadelphia surrounded by mayberry-in-decline.

bfarley30 Oct 26, 2013 2:14 PM

Beautiful pictures of the ATL!!

plinko Oct 26, 2013 5:04 PM

What's the little 'mini-Westin' in the middle of Peachtree Center in this shot?

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/j...ps090e609f.jpg

Is it a stand alone building or some sort of multi-use elevator shaft or something? I've never seen it before.

atlantaguy Oct 27, 2013 3:10 AM

It's part of the Hyatt Regency, and was built as an addition in the 80's.

It is hard to see since it's only about 23 floors and is completely surrounded.

mello Oct 27, 2013 3:37 AM

Holy chit!! I had no idea that the CBD in Atlanta was that packed full of midrise to 25/30 floor office buildings. It looks to have as much office space as Downtown LA or Philly for a metro area of its size that is very impressive.

We always talk about how burban ATL is but it seems like a decent percentage of the metro must work downtown/midtown. The linear way it is constructed is deceiving but these shots reveal there really is quite a bit there, frankly I just haven't seen a thread that has showed this off.

How much office space is there? See here in San Diego very few people work downtown so maybe growing up here has kind of thrown me off. Rarely do you meet someone and they say "I work downtown" the percentage of office space in the SD metro that is downtown is very small.

Downtown & Midtown combined is 50 million sq. ft., Buckhead is 21 million sq. ft. and the Central Perimeter area is 29 million sq. ft. (this area would remind you of UTC/La Jolla). These are the largest office markets will rail service, there is one other large one without on the NW side, Cumblerland/Galleria with approximately 23 million sq. ft.

Total office space for metro Atlanta is approximately 221 million sq. ft., of which 110 million sq. ft. is Class A space.

mello Oct 27, 2013 4:14 AM

Thanks AG, 50 million is impressive so Atlanta doesn't seem to be as multi nodal as LA because it is a much smaller metro with a similar amount of central office space. I understand it gets a bad rap due to sprawl but I think Atl deserves credit for building up an dense central cluster of office space.

You guys don't know Atlanta. I hope this thread serves as a wake-up call to all those SSPers who think Atlanta is just some exurban cyclops.

mello Oct 27, 2013 5:15 AM

This thread definitely has been a wake up call, I haven't personally seen a thread that shows the chunkiness down below the few 600+ footers that are spread throughout this linear CBD and it is quite an extensive amount of chunk. Also the shot of Buckhead in the "Two Skylines in One Shot" thread looked very impressive from that angle, I was taken aback by how built up it was.

The thing is though mello is that it actually is multi-nodal, but the core is linked by the subway. That's why it is so linear, and looks so "thin" in many skyline shots.

Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead & Perimeter Center are on the same rail line, and most highrise development has clustered nearby over the last 25 years. Atlanta is sort of a hybrid type of place, to be sure.

Best shots of Atlanta I ever seen

thomas_zul Oct 27, 2013 8:55 AM

Nice shots. I like the style of City Hall building!

volguus zildrohar Oct 27, 2013 7:18 PM

I've been to Atlanta twice and didn't love it. Still, nice shots.

The streetcar is coming along I see.

tdawg Oct 27, 2013 8:39 PM

I've always loved Atlanta's mix of big city grit and small town neighborhoods, all within a couple blocks of each other. You've showcased that well. I thought for a while I was crazy for loving Atlanta so much but a friend of mine just moved down there after getting a job with Turner (she's a lifelong NY'er) and she is obsessed—loves it.

cabasse Oct 27, 2013 8:43 PM

^ that's ok.

Nice pics thundertubs, glad you liked it. We have better bones than a lot of people realize, we just need more meat on them now.

ChrisLA Oct 27, 2013 9:45 PM

Nice shots, this brings back memories of the first time I visited Atlanta. I was surprised by how much grit the city has, and you seem to have captured this in your photos of what I recall seeing.

atlantaguy Oct 27, 2013 10:34 PM

Thundertubs - great thread, btw! I was so focused on answering mello's questions I forgot to thank you, and glad you enjoyed your visit.

I am so glad you captured the "Mayberry-in-decline" streets east of Downtown in Sweet Auburn. They probably won't be recognizable shortly after the streetcar opens next Spring.

Just beyond this area are the very vibrant historic hoods of Old Fourth Ward/Inman Park/Little Five Points along the BeltLine. Do yourself a favor the next time you're in town and check them out, you won't be disappointed.
