Either those interested applied and wanted to keep it quiet to avoid competition, or this forum is much more talk than action. I honestly don't know which, but I'm quickly formulating an opinion.

actually, i looked at this with a lot of interest, but the meeting times don't work for me at all.

I've always had my eye on LACAC sometime down the road when the kids are bigger and my current projects are more established. I actually interviewed for a summer job with the Hamilton LACAC back when they actually had money to hire summer students (I'm that old). I didn't get it. I was a whippersnapper from TO and knew next to nothing about Hamilton at the time. If I'd known then what I know now...:)

That's great, unless you happen to WORK during normal work hours!

Unfortunately, I've noticed that setting things such as this during the work day, seems to almost be done by design to limit the type of candidates that apply.

Seems to me that setting the time during the day (and it's done for many city things) would encourage many retirees to be participants on the committees. Not that I have anything against retirees, but different points of view are always welcome.

My dad worked in the Westinghouse building for 39 years. He met my mom there.

It was quite the building when it was in use...lots of brass trim and an executive dining room with a very large round wooden table. Breaks my heart to see it abandoned and run down like that.

Could someone please create a google map which shows where these buildings are? I haven't a clue where the Westinghouse building is.

Are there other big empty buildings we should be adding to this discussion.

Maybe we should define big to mean something more than 3 floors or more than just a large former family home? Any better ideas for the classification?

done

omro Oct 2, 2008 3:34 PM

not sure if this can be done, but can you have the google map also show a photo of each place in a pop up box, where a photo is available?

matt602 Oct 2, 2008 3:56 PM

If you guys want some more:

- Lyric/Century theatre on Mary St., just North of King on the East side.
- Tivoli Theatre auditorium (Hughson just North of Wilson on the West side)
- Lister buildings (not just the Lister Block but also the buildings immediately North in the same block, along Rebecca. LIUNA owns these as well. Surprise, surprise.)
- Firestone (Burlington St just Northeast of Kenilworth intersection, immediately East of National Steel Car)
- Consumers Glass (between Barton, Gage, Lottridge and the CN tracks, nearest to Gage)
- Hamilton Metals (right near the Mac Innovation Park, bordering with Aberdeen at the CP Rail bridge)

There's TONS more, those are just the popular ones. I can provide photos of any of these buildings as well, if requested.

i might be able to do this... either directly in google maps, or with the google maps api on historicalhamilton

i'll look into it tonight

astroblaster Oct 2, 2008 5:58 PM

ok, adding a pic was pretty easy within google maps itself, so i put pictures under the federal building and city hall now

i have photos of a few of these buildings, but if you want to provide some matt, here's what i would need:

- Tivoli Theatre auditorium
- the other Lister buildings
- Firestone
- Consumers Glass
- Hamilton Metals
- the dundurn south factory building

astroblaster Oct 2, 2008 5:59 PM

oh.. and please do list more if you can, i'd love to learn about all of these. i will map them all and work on getting photos if nobody has them yet.

I'm impressed, that's very cool

Isn't there a Mohawk college building that is now vacant or did I misread that from somewhere, as I often do?
