HOUSTON | The Eclipse | 736 FT / 224 M | 58 FLOORS

Developer: Zydeco Development Corp.
Architect:
Type: Residential
Location: Welch Ave near Persa St, River Oaks
Construction Timeline: June 2017 Start Date - June 2019 Completion

*An unexpected find, in mid-2014 the developer filed a subdivision plat to create an unrestricted reserve for this development, which was later approved. No other information was known at the time.

Today, they filed a case with the FAA for the height of this building, 750' feet. Unfortunately this proposal will be met with strong opposition. The River Oaks neighborhood tried to stop a 17-story/220 foot office tower from being built just down the street.

Here's the FAA filing:

Hopefully the River Oaks NIMBYS fail at stopping this. I'd imagine a 750 ft would rile up the militia more so than a 17 floor structure.

KevinFromTexas Oct 10, 2015 3:45 AM

Is this residential? If so that would make it taller than both The Austonian and The Independent in Austin - and so the tallest residential building in Texas.

bobdreamz Oct 10, 2015 4:55 AM

Well after looking at Google View a 750 foot tower seems out of place for the surrounding neighborhood but it is Houston without Zoning though.
No renderings?

TexasBoi Oct 10, 2015 2:15 PM

Guess you have to take the good with the bad on this one on zoning and all. Rather this built in downtown. There is a highrise not far from this site though.

Urbannizer Oct 10, 2015 10:28 PM

No renderings yet. The tallest building in the immediate area is The Huntingdon at 503' feet. Built in 1984, it's also just down the street from this. The building most likely will be residential, but no confirmation on that yet. It'll have amazing views of Downtown, Uptown, TMC, etc.

Will be interesting to see how this one plays out. I hope it pulls through.

Urbannizer Oct 22, 2015 3:46 AM

Building height revised to 736' feet.

Some renderings from have surfaced, which may not be final. Doubt they'll stick with this design as the neighborhood would find it very insulting.

that's rough...

KevinFromTexas Oct 23, 2015 11:01 PM

It looks like a rocket.

And are these toilet plungers?

Ploppalopp Oct 24, 2015 1:30 AM

Thats the funniest thing i've seen all day! Toilet plungers connected to an absolutely ridiculous looking building. It looks so strange it kinda looks good, kinda like the watts towers in LA.

photoLith Oct 24, 2015 4:28 AM

That has to be a joke, please tell me it's a joke. That's like out of some hellish 1980s version of future skyscrapers and or Dubai.

texboy Oct 24, 2015 5:09 PM

This HAS to be a joke. The building is hideous in the strongest sense of the word!

TexasBoi Oct 25, 2015 5:11 PM

LOL:haha: Especially at the plungers. An unborn could come up with something better.

Reverberation Oct 26, 2015 3:47 AM

Even the name is trippy. I think they should build it. They should build the s**t out of it.

The Best Forumer Oct 26, 2015 5:10 PM

Absolutely stunning!

toxteth o'grady Oct 27, 2015 3:16 PM

Well, that's gaudy in an Abraj al-Bait sort of way. They do give themselves a whole lot of lead time on this one starting out of the ground - 2017? This must have been pitched to EB-5 prospects.

I see - they're going to tease us with this and then do an "and now for something completely different", similar to what happened to the Alessandra.:runaway:

Zydeco's website suggests they've never done a big project before. They're from New Mexico and most of their previous projects are in the 2-3 story range. They may be in way over their heads.:surrender:

HomeInMyShoes Oct 27, 2015 3:25 PM

It's not April 1st is it?

Marty_Mcfly Oct 27, 2015 4:28 PM

The plungersphere must be built.

SignalHillHiker Oct 27, 2015 4:32 PM

Only a proposal and already an internationally-known icon.

Houstono Oct 28, 2015 2:00 AM

This tower reminds me of the Tomorrow Square in Shanghai or the 23 Marina tower in Dubai.

The shape of this tower is pretty interesting, just not the exterior, it's horrendous :yuck:.

Biff Oct 28, 2015 7:48 PM

Looks like the layout view of a cruise ship.

Slyfox Oct 29, 2015 2:04 AM

The design is very uniqe, as previously stated it's like something designed for Dubai, as if to show off. Houston has many beautiful but non-descript highrises, something like this would be a landmark, something to stand out when people see photos so they'll realize right away "Ah, I know that's Houston" Like the Twin Towers, Sydney Opera House, St. Louis Arch, Seattle Sky Needle.... it's just a shame it's not in the downtown.

At least with the clock tower you would know the time of your death, as you would have to immediately kill yourself after viewing this monstrosity.

Sic'EmBears Oct 29, 2015 4:49 AM

I'm not sure if the toilet plungers are a slap to Houston's massive blue collar labor force, but the entire building is a disgrace.

The design is a brutal mix of both Dubai's Elite Residence and Al Yaqoub towers.

Most likely new renderings will be released.

Yackemflaber69 Oct 29, 2015 6:23 AM

Not even Dubai is this horrible.

c4smok Oct 29, 2015 9:42 AM

Looks pretty different is the word.. Though why not

kingkirbythe.... Oct 29, 2015 3:08 PM

This must be built!

sentinel Oct 29, 2015 3:14 PM

That's precious.

texboy Oct 29, 2015 3:28 PM

Did this thing get uglier? This certainly would be iconic.... :/

Urbannizer Nov 12, 2015 7:22 PM

What a terrible building...

optimusREIM May 30, 2019 2:15 PM

That would be the most hilarious thing if it were completed. The world's biggest meme

rgarri4 May 30, 2019 2:55 PM

This physically hurts my eyes. Just wow.

patriotizzy May 30, 2019 4:05 PM

Looks like something out of Malaysia, or an Asian country that is desperate for their signature tower. Looks better than anything Houston is proposing honestly.

colemonkee May 31, 2019 2:53 PM

Looks like something Micheal Graves would have designed after being inspired by a trip to Azerbaijan. The masochist in my says it must be built, only because it's so awful.

giantSwan May 31, 2019 3:32 PM

hilarious - this thing is so unbelievably ugly
