I wouldn`t expect the Hurricanes to be going to Quebec.

From TSN

Quote:

According to Bloomberg's Scott Soshnick, former Texas Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg is close to buying the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes for roughly $500 million.
Soshnick reports the the deal would keep the Hurricanes in Carolina under the new ownership. He points out the price tag will be close to the fee Bill Foley paid for a Vegas expansion team and close to double Forbes' $230 million estimate of the Hurricanes' value.
I don't think an American owner with no ties to Quebec would look to move the team there. He also seems to have grossly overpaid for this team.

You can bet he didn't pay anything close to 500 mill for the team. They did some accounting magic to make it seem that way.
The team is valued at half that price (which is probably still over-valued) in that poor hockey market - yet it sold for almost the exact same amount as a new expansion team that's starting out this year. What a coincidence!

This is just shenanigans to try and keep franchise values inflated while at the same time not trying to piss off the new Vegas owner for paying 500 mill for an expansion team when an already established franchise (which has won a Cup) could've been purchased for half the price.

The NHL isn't fooling anyone. It really is a bush-league.

Yeah. Any sales have to be approved by the NHL BoG, right? So they can tell this Texas guy to STFU about the real sale amount, and the 500M stays out there as the "official" price, and no one will ever really know.

Centre videotron will be old by the time poor Quebec gets a team.

Perhaps they should have waited to land an NHL franchise before building an NHL-scale arena.

If they can't get a team with a brand new arena there's no way in hell they'd get one to play in the colisee.

Lots of places have brand new arenas - the NHL isn't scrambling to cover areas they already have a large market-share of.

Quebec needs the NHL more than the NHL needs Quebec, and the NHL will continue using Quebec's desperation for a team as leverage on new markets or sales of franchises (Carolina).

That is the expansion fee that Foley paid for Vegas and what Quebec was to pay during the expansion bidding. The sliding Canadian dollar made it $650 million Canadian and stalled the Quebec City bid (officially) as that was deemed too much. Easier for Foley in Vegas to pay that amount of money as its private than a publicly traded company to justify the figure on their balance sheet.

I should mention it was reported that Vegas is doing really well on the ticket revenue front. Apparently they are either 5 or 6 in the NHL now (either just ahead or just behind Montreal) and the top 4 being Toronto, New York Rangers, Chicago and Edmonton.

Then you also have to consider that with conference configuration, they want a Western Conference team playing in the central division as the other 3 divisions are now 8 teams but the Central is 7. With news that the Rockets and the Toyota Center are for sale, I bet the NHL is hoping someone in Houston wants a team and give them an expansion franchise. Seattle will then get Arizona when they finally get their arena issue sorted out thus putting Arizona out of their misery. That way they solve the conference imbalance and end the Arizona prolonged deathbed watch.

It has almost become a tradition to underestimate the Sens.

The Hype of the Leafs has become unbelievable.

Not surprised they aren't bringing Markov back, the guy has done really well by Montreal, but he's old and they could probably spend that salary more wisely. Whether they will actually spend it better remains to be seen...

After how well he did with the Kings after the trade deadline, I'm actually surprised noone has signed Iginla. Looks like him and Doan will be the veterans on our Olympic team in February.

Hopefully with the money this free's up, the Habs will pick up a decent center forward.

Habs tied for 6th? Yeah right ! That's not going to happen. Habs should be about where the Sens are, 30-1.

Calgarian Jul 27, 2017 3:48 PM

I like that they have the Flames lower on that list, have a feeling this team is going to surprise a lot of people this season...

It's a bit of a chicken and egg scenario, where they don't get a team without an arena but the arena doesn't necessarily get them a team.

So it's been announced that the NHLers will not participate in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
Russia might destroy us, or we might not even get to the round where we meet Russia because we're placed with Switzerland, Czech, and S.Korea in the same group. We might meet Finland, USA or Sweden after that as well.

Ummm. It about making money. More people will bet on the Leafs and Habs at 2:1 than the Sens at 1,000,000 to 1.
