This has always confused me. If they want to build the Travis Co. Courthouse down by Republic Square, why are they putting the DA office so far away? I thought the purpose of the bigger courthouse was to consolidate a lot of related offices.
Someone explain to me the overall plan for placement of our legal system. |
The larger courthouse they're wanting to build across from Republic Square Park will be for civil trials. Mostly things like weddings-on-the-cheap and divorces and other civil disputes. The DA's office only handles criminal cases. So that's why they'll be separate. They eventually want to build a new criminal courthouse as well near the existing one and the jail. The old courthouse will likely become some other county office after it goes through a renovation/restoration project. One thing that is splitting the uses up, too, is that most of the land the county owns around there is within CVCs, so they can't go very tall on all of them. The block where this building is going for instance has three corridors running through it.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know about the splitting up of civil and criminal.
What and when were the latest rumblings on a new criminal court house? |
Check out the county's Central Campus Plan on their website. They have a few PDF links with the different scenarios. A couple of them showed buildings of 180 to 200 feet. the links are dated 2009 and 2011. I don't think there's been much more about it except this 7-story building.

Thanks. I just found that site before you posted it. haha It seems they accepted Scenario 2A. I like the plan. Looks like they make good use of the space they have with all the restrictions. Focused on making it more pedestrian friendly with Great Streets and retail, but also providing ample parking (2000+ spaces).
It also looks like they are going to restore the current courthouse instead of build a new one. They're going to remove the pedestrian bridge, the 1958 addition on the north side, and the 1962 addition on the west side. Parking lot will also be removed and original landscape restored. I think it'll look outstanding. |
We'll probably still get two more highrises out of that plan. The new booking facility/garage and the expansion to the existing Blackwell-Thurman Justice Center (jail). The new jail expansion looks to be about 260 feet judging from the other buildings.

I'm already wondering what those verticle fins on the facade are going to be made of. They sort of look like long banners. Overall I like all the glass on this building.

Site plan info. No plans released yet.
https://www.austintexas.gov/devrevie...erRSN=11102456 It looks to me like it may just barely be a highrise. Maybe 115 feet or so. http://i.imgur.com/SJkweqS.jpg http://i.imgur.com/lnD3ym1.jpg |

The building permit says this is 6-stories and 86.1'. That's a little shorter than expected.

Bummer. I was pretty sure it was going to be taller than that.
|
They released the site plan. The elevations are files 065 through 069. They show the top of the mechanical penthouse at 90 feet 4 inches.

A tower crane permit was filed and has a March start date. March is shaping up to be a big month for new construction.

Of all the permits you guys seem to find the tower crane one always seems to be the last sign that it is going to happen. You all should be on the payroll for the AAS and the Chronicle.
