Thank you for your words. ^^
Despite the almost 50 years of communist regime the City of Constanta had it's own way of development. From 1890 to 1943 (in 1887 it's annexed by Romania) due to the strategic location of the city many US, British and German companies invested here. This left a mark on the city. The US was the most prominent. The street developing followed the traditional US grid. Also many art-deco/modernist US style buildings had been built, some survived until nowadays as landmarks (stock house, mamaia casino, passenger terminal, the grain silos, the water company HQ,port's power plant, Holiday Radio Building, Albatros hotel, Rex Hotel, the old air terminal and others).
Despite the communist regime the grid model continued to be developed in the new districts and is also used today.
The communist regime in Constanta was a little different because of the port and the large number of foreign tourists form west Europe and US. In Mamaia resort there were shops called "Shops" where the currency was US Dollar or the old german mark. Here from the smugglers or sailors everybody was buying blue jeans, marlboro, whyskey and foreign vinyls. Holiday Radio, and Holiday radio Costinesti resort were the only radios where you could here western music.
Even there were built many commie apartment blocks, many of them don't have the box architecture. Some representative commies have apartments with 3, 4, and 5 rooms. The US model wasn't abandoned even in the commie regime. The mayor of the city disliked the commie block type of some of the new hotels that were built in Mamaia Resort so he sent the chief architect in US. When he returned he built Perla Hotel inspired by Lever Building. Also he built in the northern part of the resort new hotels with terraced architecture and arround Tabacarie Lake he built the Central Park (and also the other parks) in a square shape as seen in New York.
One thing that we are proud of (and with this I end the off topic :D) is that there were no ethnic or religious conflict in the city's history. (the "native" papulation it's a mix of over 20 nationalities, there are almost 20.000 expats living here, and at the medical collage there are 5.000 non EU students from 113 countries). Despite this big mix of cultures and religions there never was, and never will be ethnic districts. Everybody lives with everybody, and everybody is welcome here :D.
