Some Random Shots of Ottawa
I did a fair bit of walking around Ottawa last summer. Should probably upload some of those photos.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...45916801_n.jpg 1.A pretty bleak building that often looks really lonely. https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...62482160_n.jpg 2.Some views from a quarry or something. Not quite the escarpment, but still nice. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...84630549_n.jpg 3.I warn you that I think facebook duplicated some of these, but I'm not sure. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...28106428_n.jpg 4.I think they're all part of Lincoln Fields. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...26508242_n.jpg 5.There's really a lot of apartment buildings out here. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...11184725_n.jpg 6.No zoom. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...92508043_n.jpg 7.Suddenly a city appears!:D https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...31175994_n.jpg 8.This street is like 10 lanes wide at some points. Proof that two way isn't necessarily friendly. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...92365902_n.jpg 9.Lots of concrete in those buildings. I think it might be Ottawa's favourite material. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...35644294_n.jpg 10.They also like these little lowrise clumps. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...54381090_n.jpg 11. They're unique at least. Could use some proper trees I think. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...58838606_n.jpg 12.Green is good. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...02496220_n.jpg 13. It's a garden. My numbering system sort of makes every picture need a comment, so some of these aren't so inspiring. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...43200376_n.jpg 14.Lots of these new houses in Ottawa. I'm not sure if they increase the population density or are just bigger. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...86216436_n.jpg 15.I like this building. Also apparently those blossoms are a sign of a major winter. They weren't lying this year.:D https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...14839096_n.jpg 16. I think they must have an apartment up those stairs, though maybe it's just weird architecture. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...49372885_n.jpg 17.Much older than it's neighbours. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...96768935_n.jpg 18.Quite the fire escape. https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...15615138_n.jpg 19.I like the rooftop patio thing. https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...16815960_n.jpg 20.This is probably under construction by now. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...78647215_n.jpg 21.I suppose it protects you from the rain as you go from one building to the other. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...74743831_n.jpg 22.I like hills. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...99043482_n.jpg 23.Lots of these new condo buildings out here. https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...87620587_n.jpg 24.Different styles. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...89294259_n.jpg 25.Some older buildings too. Not that much older though. https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...36888576_n.jpg 26.Lots of shops, which is nice. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...75287862_n.jpg 27. . . . Comment. . . https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...26543421_n.jpg 28.Nice and glassy. https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...15077733_n.jpg 29.This street remains pretty built up for a very long distance, but it hardly ever crosses another busy street. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...73383635_n.jpg 30.They like this bumpy metal stuff these days. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...62730731_n.jpg 31.I really don't understand why. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...66027582_n.jpg 32.Transitway stops are so friendly looking. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...43550619_n.jpg 33.This is another walk. I like it, just confused. https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...37444313_n.jpg 41.Dowtown does look nice from this angle. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...27156719_n.jpg 42.So tiny! https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...47808059_n.jpg 43.Tunney's Pasture and surroundings. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...68700716_n.jpg 44.More concrete. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...62289058_n.jpg 45.Islands on the river. https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...48727018_n.jpg 46.Okay, some of these aren't technically Ottawa, but I was in Ottawa at leas. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...52150480_n.jpg 47.The library on Parliament is the best of Parliament. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...33584996_n.jpg 48.I wish the previous one hadn't burned down.:( https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...94199720_n.jpg 49.I think this is a duplicate. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...06216518_n.jpg 50.There are some nice old buildings in the downtonw. Downtown is actually behind me though. I have more pictures too. A lot more. I don't want to do more than one set a page though so that it doesn't take a month to load. |
Thanks for this tour about Ottawa, Beedok!
Ottawa is very nice. I´ve visited it twice, and I´ve always liked it a lot, above all the Parliament and the city centre. I´m not used to see Ottawa´s neighbourhoods, and I see them interesting too. Ottawa is a charming city, indeed. Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain! |
I really must get back to my birth city one of these days.
|
Ottawa's shining star seems to be it's shorter historic buildings and row home like buildings. A Lot of those are just beautiful, where as the skyline and most of the high rises aren'nt especially attractive.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...20423483_n.jpg this looks particularly nice. |
Very interesting & well-rounded tour of the city. :)
|
Some nice pics in there. thanks for sharing!
|
Nice tour. Cheers.
BTW the library is the only part of the Centre Block that didn't burn in the 1916 fire. And yeah, I love that 'little' building on Wellington but it does look out of place. |

Hamilton and Toronto for that matter, certainly have their share of Commie Blocks but those ones in Ottawa take the cake. Gross.
I spent a couple years in Ottawa back in the day and really enjoyed it. I loved the fact that you could bump into political personalities like Eddie Goldenberg or Susan Bonner on the street or wherever. Yeah, wow, I know! ;) Anyway, I left because I knew I'd be stuck in Kanata or Barbecuehaven - forget getting a house anywhere in the city centre. Keep the photos coming. |
This makes the skyline look like a well-groomed hedge. I love it:

Number 16.
The funnyish house on edgewood. Is in fact 3 apartments. I lived on the second floor one with my family back before westboro boomed. It is a pear tree out front. The owners a greek family used to be on the first floor. But who knows now. That was 25 years ago. Hah. Thanks for that literal walk down memory lane. |
Not what i was expecting at all!
I take it Ottawa was some sort of settlement in it's own right before becoming the capital? I'd always vaguely assumed it was planned in some way. Nice pics. |

^And it was a lumber town - not very glamorous but there you go.
Similar to the Australian situation, choosing the capital was a politically sensitive issue. Rather than creating a new capital (e.g. Canberra) they choose a town equidistant from both Toronto and Montreal. Ottawa was neither too English, nor too French, nor too close to the border with the Yanks. Perfect. ;) |
46) and 57) were my favorites. That crown, or whatever the technical term is, is really nice.
