Otahita - A Google SketchUp City

Hey

I have finally begun my first city. It is called Otahita, located on Florida's east coast.

So far, I have made the land where the metropolitan area will lay. GoogleEarth snapshots helped me trace the land to exactly how it really is. What we have here is pure land untouched by man, but that will soon change.

Here is where Otahita is located in Florida.

This is the area upclose. The pin marks where the main city will be located.

I plan to not only create a city, but an entire metropolitan including highways, suberbs, airports and more. I hope I can make everything like trees and houses on my own instead of using others' models. I also hope my computer can handle it, lol.

Thanks for reading. Pictures of the above land modeled soon to come.

Here is the land where Otahita will be built :)

As you can see, no roads, buildings, bridges, or anything manmade as of yet! Just Pure land. I don't know how long it's going to take me to get this thing lookin like a city, but I hope soon!

The modeled land is coming along nicely I think. Below is a top view image of the modeled land with the different geographic features labeled for a better understanding of what you're looking at. The creek in the middle is where the main part of the city, the downtown, will be located.

This is the middle creek upclose. Around this area will contain the tallest of the buildings, and most likely a few bridges.

Looking inland from above, you can see the three creeks...

Fog enabled, looking out into the lagoon from the middle creek. The beaches are also visible on the horizon.

Thank you for the replies :)

I have made one building, Otahita's first building! It is called the Sunshine State Building. It is 870 feet tall. It is not textured yet, but that will be done eventually. The location is not permenant either, it will be moved somewhat more inland. I was having trouble making sure the building was the right scale too because I want it to be proportional to the real world. I'm not sure what style of architecture the Sunshine State Building would be considered... it looks like art deco, which is kind of what I was going for. There is most likely a lot more to be done with the building, but the basic design is complete at least. Pictures below, I hope you like, if not, tell me because I want to know, any feedback appreciated.

I might change the top of the building to a flat design instead of a point. It's hard to decide though. More buildings and a grid soon to come.

Thanks for viewing :)

i like it ....... its is a bit different which is good

rbowk May 19, 2007 10:58 PM

how do you get your pics to that size ?

KevinFromTexas May 19, 2007 11:21 PM

That's cool. Sort of reminds me of two buildings that were proposed for Denver and Grand Rapids.

Nice! I can't wait to see more of it!

Resize it in Photoshop.

Well here is The Sunshine State Building with textures and a revised design. The building is actually shorter now at 588 feet, but I think it has improved a lot.

I took some of the stepped corner and facade designs out, because they seemed a little excessive before. I know the building looks a somewhat odd, but I will keep it because I thought as odd as it may look, when I eventually have a nice big skyline, it will stand out for being different. Besides, if I must, I could always edit it more. The Sunshine State Building is a keeper!

Question about SketchUp:
How can I change the FOV to default? I messed around with it and I can't figure out the default. It feels really zoomed in. Thanks!

Thats some sexy landscapein. ;) The Sunshine State Building looks great, I suggest starting with the grid first, so you can plan ahead.

Peter May 20, 2007 6:27 PM

Thanks for the tip Patrick. I plan to make the grid, or at least get it started, as soon as I do one more building, which is almost complete.

Peter May 20, 2007 9:04 PM

New building, The Otahita Tower. It is sort of a gothic design mixed with art deco. It looks similar to the first building. This was the architectural style of Otahita during the 1920s when its first high-rises were being constructed. The textures for both buildings are not permanent.

I have begun work on the streets, as you can see in the image, blocks have been started. The Sunshine State Building takes up a whole block. One of two small buildings will fill in the rest of the Otahita Tower's block.

Very awesome!

Dear Leader VI May 21, 2007 1:42 AM

Excellent! I love the art deco buildings. Keep it up!

Patrick May 21, 2007 5:42 AM

Yes Yes good detail!

Peter May 22, 2007 9:29 AM

Thank you all for the comments :)

Otahita looks like a city finally. Not a very big one yet, but still a city. Here is what I got so far.

Here is another view. Notice the developement beginning on the beachside off in the distance.

These buildings are not done yet as you can tell. They need more detail and texture. The two that are most near to completion are The Sunshine State Building (the tall one on the left) and the Otahita Tower (tall one on the right).

The small gold building on the bottom left is going to be a super art deco hotel. There is a parking garage and an old clock tower building, which will be known as Otahita's oldest building, constructed in the early 1900s. There will be more detail about each and every building in the future, but for now, there are things that must be done, such as the grid.
