Another essentially foregone conclusion, but the City issued the hotel's building permit today.

Awesome news...but I can't help be irked at how the article just HAD to drag the Derby issue into it. Sigh...

Agreed, and how the developer suggested that the Derby was in an inappropriate area by comparison:

Just truck mounted cranes popping up here and there. Permanent, not yet.

The tower crane is going up today.

Can't wait to see these buildings go up. Good stuff happening downtown.

Two observations/questions:

1. where will the parking for the hotel be? Obviously it's not underground and it doesn't look like the hotel will sit on a parking podium.
2. according to the site plan on the first post, the residential tower should be considerably larger. From the OxBlue camera, it looks like the hotel is taking up at least half of the lot. Is it just the angle?

1. This is a pretty good head-scratcher. I'm not even sure the residential portion will have a podium since the footprint looks a little too small to have a podium garage. If it does, it will not even be completed until well after the Hampton Inn is completed. I am not sure if there is enough parking at Freeport/Westin to support the hotel and definitely not enough for the residential tower. I'm not familiar with the Freeport tower, but I believe there is no underground garage, correct?

2. The footprint of the hotel and the residential are nearly identical. There's much more room on the West portion of the lot than the camera makes it look.

To the best of my knowledge, no parking structure is planned. Given the location across from Central Station, I suspect many guests will not be arriving via car. Those that do will have numerous garages and lots available to them in the surrounding blocks. I assume the hotel will work out some sort of preferred provider relationship with one of them.

With as many levels the Westin garage is, it seems to be enough to support the new hotel as well. That garage seems to be enough to support the original plans The project had like 10 years ago.

Looks like they already are up to two floors this is moving quick.

With the small footprint, it should go up 1 floor per week. Hopefully, it tops by mid-June

I didn't get the sense that the Westin/FM tower is that well parked, it's like 3 spaces for every 1000 square feet. That's low for office in the modern era, but it could be high for everything that became hotel rooms.

These also are not the original plans. This lot was very nearly built out with a standalone parking garage until the property switched hands. There was also talk of the hotel portion being built next to the office tower at first, and parking was definitely intended for it if it went through-- of course, it ended up inside the office tower.

Regardless, as if the block couldn't get any better, they built a project without parking. Love it. I just hope the residential portion gets completed.

Man that's got to suck working outside in this heat!

How tall are the floors above the first level? 10 feet? They seem short.
