The 5 most expensive homes in Vancouver

Thought this was interesting. these figures are from 2008 and are based on assessed value and not market value.

#5. 130 South Oxley St., West Vancouver $16,324,000

The home of condo kingpin Nat Bosa and his wife, Flora, was designed by the renowned modernist architect Fred Hollingsworth and completed in 1993. The massive waterfront lot — at the end of one of West Van’s poshest streets — ranks it among the highest assessed properties in the area. Market value: about $30 million.

#4. 4719 Belmont Ave., West Point Grey $17,548,000

The westernmost swath of West Point Grey has become a destination for the super-rich. No wonder: the area combines huge lots with grand Shaughnessy-style manors and views of English Bay — all without the commute across the Lions Gate Bridge. 4719 Belmont Avenue (the smaller house, left), is the home of former Future Shop owner Hassan Khosrowshahi and his wife, Nezhat. It boasts a central courtyard with a retractable, pyramid-shaped glass roof. Interior design was handled by British decorator David Laws, who revamped 10 Downing Street for Margaret Thatcher. On the right is Joseph and Rosalie Segal’s $12-million spread. The home was designed to accommodate the couple’s many philanthropic events — the formal dining room seats 34. Other features include a chandelier once owned by Mussolini, and a glass spa with an oval-shaped pool.

#3. 2815 Point Grey Rd., Kitsilano $21,216,000

Location, location, location. Jacqui Cohen-Herrendorf’s estate occupies a 30,499-square-foot chunk of waterfront land next to Volunteer Park — neighbourhood noise and looky-loos are a nonissue. Her estate has 150 feet of beachfront in an area where 30 to 50 feet is the norm. The home was reportedly inspired by the Army & Navy owner’s former residence in California. Rumour has it she’s planning to demolish the estimated 12,000-square-foot structure and design a new one with Russell Hollingsworth — architect to the super-wealthy and fellow Face the World board member.

#2. 4785 Drummond Dr., West Point Grey $20,478,000
http://www.guestlife.com/media/Guest...erhalf-78a.jpg
The home that video games built. Don Mattrick, the former Electronic Arts Worldwide president who now heads up Microsoft’s games division, shares this 25,000-square-foot pad with his wife, Nanon, whose father, Philippe de Gaspé Beaubien, founded and was chairman and CEO of the Quebec-based Telemedia publishing and broadcasting empire. The three-lot property features a 10-car garage, basketball courts, and painstakingly landscaped grounds overlooking Spanish Banks, while the home itself doubles as Mattrick’s office. (He’s said to still play 10 to 15 hours of video games a week.) It all adds up to the highest assessed property in the region; market value is probably close to $35 million.

#1. 3330 Radcliffe Ave., West Vancouver $23,878,000

When this property last changed hands, rumours circulated that Oprah Winfrey was the new owner. The actual title holder is Mountain Holding Business — reputedly Robert Friedland, the billionaire mining promoter who made his first mega-fortune from a massive nickel deposit in Voisey’s Bay, Newfoundland. These days, Friedland spends most of his time at a $9-million home in Australia, developing a mine in Mongolia, while this slick 11,000-square-foot, four-bedroom home awaits his return.

Very interesting stuff.

Especially as they don't consider condos, I guess? Just detached homes? Seems funny that we wouldn't include condos in Van of all places. . .

One of my friend's uncle lives in/owns one of those babies.

I thought that the most expensive one currently is in Burnaby...if you are talking about the Metro Vancouver Area...then the second one would be in Richmond. It was in the news and all that ....

I really cant picture that. There's some big houses in Buckingham or on Gov't Road, but they're nowhere near as expensive as stuff out in Point Grey or West Van.

there was an article on the news about a house at Deer Lake being the most expensive house to go on the market in the GVRD

Burnaby mansion could be yours for $25 million
Loewens' Twin Cedars goes on the market, becoming the most expensive home listed in Metro Vancouver and the second most expensive in B.C.

Like the rest of Twin Cedars, the sunroom of the Burnaby home was designed by architect Ernest Collins.

it's important to note that the top five listed above are based on assessed value and not market value. Assessed value is used by taxing authorities to determine taxable value only. Market value is the value of a home in today's market.

if you look at the first one, the assessed value is $16.3mil but its market value is around $30 million. big difference obviously.

that's why you don't see any condos in the top five either. there aren't any that have an assessed value of at least $16.3 million. not yet anyway.

Phil McAvity Jan 27, 2009 11:06 PM

^to even clarify further, the market value is what someone is willing to pay, the assessed value is what the government gouges you for and there's also the asking price so there are basically three measures of value.

I've seen that Burnaby house from the air using Virtual Earth and it doesn't look that impressive. I mean it's definitely nice, but nothing spectacular. I've seen other Vancouver houses that look a lot more impressive. It's the second most expensive house listed in BC and you know where number one is? Victoria! The house in Victoria ("Sweet Pea") also shows what a contrast there can be between the asking price and the assessed value because it was assessed at 11.6 while they were asking 29 for it!

The funniest thing of all about Vancouver real estate is something Alex referred to. While the west side, west van, Shaughnessy and south van are well-known for being the most well-heeled 'hoods, the biggest house in greater Vancouver is in Abbotsford and the two most expensive listings are in Burnaby and Richmond!

Here's the place in Richmond. They only want 24 for it:

http://images.mls.ca/listings/reb89/.../v724200_3.jpg

Just like Casa Mia, it's 21,000 sq/ft and while I wasn't able to post a picture of it, it has it's own bowling alley!

And that's exactly why I wouldn't want to live next to a park-because you'd have to put up with drunken yahoos like Distill3d! :D

RE: The 5 most expensive homes in Vancouver

Anitilla in mumbai is being claimed as most expensive home..as it will cost some what around $1billion.

Phil McAvity May 28, 2011 5:05 PM

^Yeah, that thing is like a modern day Palace of Versailles.

trofirhen May 28, 2011 8:52 PM

When I was little, Radcliffe Avenue and South Oxley were still just middle class. I think there was an old grocery with a Coca-Cola sign somewhere in around there.

balfour2011 Jun 3, 2011 6:29 AM
