If the perimeter steel were, hypothetically, removed, would the structural element of the core be capable of supporting the building by itself? I thought I read that somewhere, but I don't know if that's true.

Oh MAN. This really really really makes me wish I was visiting right now. Amazing. I wish I had been able to make it out that way over the holidays... I imagine the multi-colored lights made 1 WTC simply stunning at night. *envious*
