A Macleod Station would only offer a time advantage over the downtown crossover for passengers travelling from south to southeast or vis versa. Probably a relatively low volume transfer. The downtown station also promises to be underground, so will likely be more pleasant to transfer at. I hope that the downtown green line crossover actually drops the red/blue line tracks into a proper underground interchange station at initial construction. After all, it will be needed at some point, and they may as well save costs by doing it all together.

Actually that isn't too bad an idea. Far cheaper than tunneling. I don't even think I've read or seen that even suggested.

Is there a chance that the Green line could be elevated - coming out of the downtown core - that would be a lot cheaper and a nice view for the passengers - coming up Centre Street and keep it elevated all the way - past 64 Ave. Yeah/No???

Possibly not so nice of a view for those living on or near Centre Street.

Centre St. is too narrow for elevated and has to be underground (all the way to 64th!). One of the studied options was to go from surface Eau Claire across a bridge over the Bow then re-enter a tunnel under Centre. IMO, this was the best option as it would have allowed a cheaper 9th Ave station and looked super cool but was rejected for its impact on Prince's Island Park (I think).

Crossing the river was studied for being elevated but I don't think anything to 64th was ever put forward, at grade since the beginning. How is Centre St. too narrow? Curb to curb is about 17m where the el in Chicago runs in streets that are 10m wide.

Yeah I don't think many people will agree that the El is a good way to put transit down a road. I think elevated is great in the right situation, but Centre isn't one of those.

Calgary council to entertain adding $23.7 million of tax room to Green Line pot

The only way the Center Street part should be done is underground, but that's way too expensive and will never happen.

Looks the City is demolishing the Shamrock Hotel in order to build the Green Line. Tweet with some pics from Scott Dippel of CBC.

If anyone happens to be that way could you also take pics? specifically the main building. I'm curious what if any of the original 1920s structure is within.

If that isn't a firm indication that the Green Line is going ahead - then I'm not sure what would be.

The commitments from all levels of government give much firmer indications. Public works programs have been cancelled with much more work been done than a demolished building (see Site C's potential impending doom...).

Do you think that's going to happen? That would be bad for the NDP government. Lots of people out of work.

I don't know but the fact it's being seriously considered shows that construction is not necessarily a firm indicator that a project will be completed.

Not that I have any current concern over the Green Line being built now that the muppet Bill Smith is out of the race. There is other preliminary work being done also - I drove up Highfield Blvd and the landfill excavation or whatever is in progress.

Calgarian Nov 30, 2017 12:42 AM

Have they started buying up all the properties along the route?

#yyccc has voted to take $23.7 million in tax room to pay for Green Line financing for the next 27 years to 2044.
The vote was 13-2, only Farkas and Magliocca opposed

Wow, is that ever slow.

Guess I'm used to the much faster pace of construction here in Shanghai, where they can build full underground / elevated metro lines in 3-4 years maximum.
