CALGARY | National Music Centre
This is a huge and awesome project for the City of Calgary.

It will house the Canadian Music and Canadian Country Music Halls of Fame, the largest collection of musical artifacts in the country (including the Rolling Stones mobile recording studio and the Piano that Elton John recorded some of his first albums on), five floors of exhibitions which will explore the stories of music in Canada, and much much more. It will also have a 300-seat adaptable performance venue inside, live performances at the King Eddy 7 days a week, and the road that goes under the building will be closed and turned into a concert venue for major performances. It truly is an awesome project for the city and the province. When is it expected to be completed by?
|
I believe the timeline for completion is sometime in 2015, though I can't find verification of that. That seems totally possible though, considering how far along the east side is, and the significantly smaller west side being above grade already.
I'm really looking forward to the first cladding being installed. The exterior materials include terracotta, steel, and glass. The total cost is around $150 million. |
Opens Q1 2016!
|
I'm really excited for this one.

It's not being funded by the feds, but it will house the Canadian music and country music halls of fame, so I guess it will be the de facto national music museum. Calgary's Cantos Foundation (the current music centre) already houses the largest collection of musical artifacts in the country.
Here's their new video they just released.... |
Well that's pretty cool!

Oh, I thought it was just the city, province, and donations. Nevermind then!! :P Sorry
|
Really, how much $ did the Feds put in? I am sorry to all the Calgary boosters, but in no way does it make sense to have a national music museum in Calgary. None whatsoever. Montreal? Probably. Toronto? Okay. But Calgary? Nice building, though. I guess when you vote in the Conservatives they make it rain $$$ in their backyard for absolutely no reason. Too bad they won't fund Vancouver's art gallery. But then, they don't get votes there.
|
Calgary has always had the largest musical artefact collection in the country. Well maybe not always, but for the last ~2 decades or so. The only difference now is that they're getting an amazing new building and performance space. The feds contributed 1/3 of the total government commitment. $25 million from each of the 3 levels of government. Other $75 million has been raised by donations and fundraisers.
Just try reading some information first, before trying to put places down next time :P http://www.nmc.ca/our-collection/ |

The National Gallery of Canada may have a fine collection of art, but it doesn't have the same 'feel' as the Musee de Beaux-Arts or the AGO. It feels forced, like the only reason why it was built was, "well, Ottawa's the capital, so I guess it should have a museum dedicated to this country's art" and not because of a deep-rooted desire for the city to showcase great Canadian art due to a burgeoning arts scene from within the city, like in Montreal and Toronto. I think if the NGC can be in Ottawa, then the National Music Centre can be in Calgary. Really, as the city continues to grow, it will continue to contribute more and more to Canada's music roster. Is there any plan for a large, nation-wide advertising campaign a la the CMHR in Winnipeg? |
If Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver wanted the National Music Centre, than they should have built it. We've had the largest collection for over a decade, and like it or not, Calgary has two huge music festivals every summer and have contributed our fair share to Canadian music culture through country and blues, among other genres. It may not be a noticeable contribution like the other big cities, but it's obviously enough for us to have had the largest collection of musical artefacts for a while, and soon to be one of the largest performing arts centres in the country.
And no, UE, I don't think there's a plan for a marketing campaign, but I could be wrong. They didn't start the nation-wide CMHR advertising until fairly recently. Maybe it will be advertised when it comes closer to completion, similar to the CMHR. however, the CMHR cost over 2x as much as the NMC will cost, so maybe it's just not that big of a deal to advertise as much. |
I drive through this corner of downtown everyday, and it's phenomenal how quick things are going up. The NMC, East Village, new bridges on the river pathway, the fort calgary signs — it's all starting to come together... going to make an incredible addition to our city. :)
