Chevron Corp., which already has a presence of about 9,000 employees and contractors in Houston, is planning a new downtown office tower to accommodate its expansion in the city, which includes hiring another 1,752 workers.

“The announcement of our new office building underscores Chevron’s long-term commitment to Houston and Texas,” Bereket Haregot, president of Chevron’s business and real estate services group, said in a statement. “The Lone Star State and its largest city play a vital and growing role in Chevron’s global business.”

The 50-story, 1.7 million-square-foot building will be located at 1600 Louisiana St. at Pease. With Chevron’s existing property at 1500 Louisiana and 1400 Smith, the buildings will comprise a campus with indoor and outdoor common areas, a fitness center and additional parking.

Chevron’s (NYSE: CVX) headquarters will remain in San Ramon, Calif., where the supermajor was founded 130 years ago.

The final investment decision for the project — designed by HOK, an architectural firm with an office in Houston — is expected in the second quarter of 2014. Groundbreaking will follow the final investment decision, and occupancy is anticipated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2016, according to the release from Chevron.

Assisting with the expansion’s funding, the Texas Enterprise Fund will chip in $12 million toward the project.

“Employers looking to expand or relocate their businesses continue to choose Texas’ strong job creation climate, low taxes, smart regulations, fair courts and skilled workforce,” Gov. Rick Perry said in a statement. “The Texas model is a blueprint for job creation, and the investment Chevron is making in Houston with more than 1,700 high-paying jobs opens the door to significant opportunities for Texans and their families.”

Sweet. Looks to be about 750 feet since 1500 Louisiana is 600 feet.

Chevron to expand in Houston, creating 1,752 jobs

The Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas — Chevron Corp. said Wednesday it will invest millions of dollars to expand its Houston facilities, creating 1,752 new jobs and building a new 50-story downtown office tower in the world's energy capital.

California-based Chevron's investment is due in part to $12 million it will be receiving from the Texas Enterprise Fund, according to Gov. Rick Perry's office. The fund is a pot of money meant to attract outside firms and businesses to the state.

YES YES YES YES YES  that's right, time to beef up that skyline, Houston! I'm super excited...

...on that note, where's the champagne and confetti on this thread? :P I thought you boys would be flipping three shits over such news. Eh, maybe I just have to give it a few daylight hours.

Check out city compilations thread, this isn't even the best thing going on downtown alone, IMO.

Holy crap, how did I miss this?

I really want to see the design from a few more angles.

Its a nice sleek structure, from the looks of it the glass cladding with have a strip down the side. Would be a lot better of the tone of the glass was just a hint different from one side to the other. Keeps with the theme of the other towers though.
Tallest to go up in Houston since 87
Love it!

Whatever happened to 500 or 5 Allen centre or whatever it was called? I hope this project comes to fruition, wish they could have built it on a vacant lot instead of tearing down the old YMCA but oh we'll it's Houston.

Here's a look at how it will affect the skyline, a fence is now up for the site.

Like the towers, can't fathom why there's a driveway.

Like it, good for Houston.

I'm pretty sure that's a street. Right side?

TXLove Jul 6, 2013 1:17 AM

Me likes, and if the facade is just like the other two buildings then this is going to be super reflective! Congrats Htown!

Duck From NY Jul 6, 2013 10:26 AM

The street-level podium looks nice and contemporary.

The towers to some degree are aesthetically in keeping with the rest of Houston, which I think magnifies the visual impact of this project.

OfCourse Jul 7, 2013 10:49 PM

Great news! I'm pumped.

This will be located at the former Houston YMCA location?

Chevron dropped hints for six months, but nobody gets excited till it looks like shovels will hit the dirt.

How they kept this a secret for so long is amazing. A very nice project indeed.
