hkskyline's 2019 in Mokpo, South Korea

Cheap flights over the long weekend lured me to Mokpo, an off-the-beaten track destination for foreign tourists. Located in the southwestern part of the country, this is the gateway to many islands off the coast. The city itself is unfortunately known for its decay and poverty. In fact, the whole province saw public funding cuts from the 70s as the government tried to starve the opposition foothold.

Many fishing boats are still moored right in the city centre steps from the ferry terminals.

So it is not surprising that the sea offers a lot for your palette.

Although a new district, Hadang, and Mokpo in general, doesn't have much to offer in terms of international-rated hotels. There are a lot of love motels though, which discreetly have covers over their garage entrances so couples wanting a good time won't be as visible to everyone else.

Just a short walk from the residential area is Gatbawi Rock, 2 rocks that look like people wearing traditional hats. Formed by volcanic ash from about 80 million years ago, the rocks face the water and a promenade that extends into the water make viewing and photos easy.

Mokpo's city centre is quiet and seems devoid of much economic activity. Nevertheless, there are several historic points of interest and signage is decent to walk around and find them. The former Japanese consulate that was built in 1900 is now the Modern History Museum. It has many historic photographs and details from the painful occupation. After the Japanese left, the building became City Hall, Municipal Library, and Cultural Centre.

Part 2 of the museum is a few blocks away at the former Oriental Colonization Company's branch. The building dates from 1920 and the company's intention was to monopolize the local economy for the Japanese overlords.

Looking not bad, Mokpo is really rare.

Yudalsan is quite a popular hike and is much busier than the main streets below. The path is paved and it is not too difficult to hike up to the first few observation areas. A cable car, albeit delayed, is under construction to make the ascent even more seemless.

My hike would end at Ildeung-bawi, the main peak. Trails continue along the ridge to the second peak, but I was already content with the city and sea views.

South Korea looks alright, but rest of the areas are not as developed as advertised except Soeul.

Boseong is famous for its green tea plantations in terraced, hilly settings. Daehan Dawon is the region's most famous plantation and is open to the public for a modest fee. Many Korean dramas have filmed here, with many signs pointing to where and when.

Getting here for the non-Korean speakers can be a challenge. From Mokpo, intercity buses take 1.5 hours to reach the town of Boseong and its fairly rustic-looking bus station. While there are no ticket agents working here, the machines do have English options and take credit cards for your return journey.

The Maritime Museum showcases various hauls found from sunken wrecks. The best part is it is free to visit. Over 200 ceramic and celadon wares from Fujian were recovered from around Mado Island. These artifacts from the Song and Yuan Dynasties were originally destined for Korea and Japan.

During the Goryeo Dynasty, sea trade between Korea and China was active. There were a number of shipwrecks found in the southwestern part of the country near Mokpo. The sunken Wando and Talido ships were salvaged and its artifacts are now on display.

The second gallery is all about the Sinan, which sailed from present-day Ningbo in 1323 destined for Japan. It disappeared just off the Korean coast and was found by a fisherman in 1975. Archaeological work on the shipwreck continued for the next 9 years.

No trip to the Mokpo area is complete unless you make an island excursion. Heuksando and Hongdo are the 2 main tourism islands just off the coast. Both are relatively unknown on the international scene, and I seemed to be the only foreign tourist during my day trip excursion to Heuksando. English is not really spoken but locals are extremely friendly. They try very hard to help so the language barrier ended up to be a good thing.

From Mokpo, these large fast ferries make the 2-hour trip out. They don't run too frequently but the schedules are adequate for a day trip.

There were stalls selling various types of seafood right outside and a line of tourist buses parked. It took a bit of time to find someone who could speak some English to ask about the tour. Ultimately, I was told to come back about an hour later, as groups of locals filled up some of the buses one by one. I guessed they probably pre-booked all these excursionss.
