thanks! i feel like i'm a still-life photographer, and i tend to shy away from photographing people/scenes but it's nearly impossible in china, so it forces me to do what i don't usually do, which i like.

a side-question to our shanghai /china crew if they see this...what is the deal with the dogs off leashes in the middle of the city? so many well behaved, almost human-like dogs around. i also saw plenty running loose in the countryside but that was expected.

the scale of shanghai felt a bit like chicago, actually, with some re-arrangements vis-à-vis the position of the river dividing the mega-highrise district from the bund and beyond the other direction. that model only fell apart when i started taking the metro around and then left the city only to see many miles of mid-rise suburbia stretching to the horizon. there was a much less intense euro-american presence on the streets of certain districts than i actually expected. on the flipside, there were more global-moneyed class types from south america and even africa than i expected. and bus after bus of grey headed austrialian retirees!

So fascinating! Shanghai and Guangzhou have some similarites, at least the view along the river.

uhhh...maybe. i rode out to the countryside through endless highrise suburbia and took a few photos...

it's sort of like that sans ferris wheel..copy + pase...

what i found more interesting than that was the "countryside," which is nearly unrecognizable as countryside in most parts of the world...at least the highly arable areas. not sure if i photographed that though. essentially tripledeckers about the same size as you might see in boston but scattered across the landscape in between crops.

Shanghai is def. in my top 5 international destinations. I remember you talking about your trip, and I have to say I was jealous! Great set!

Nice photos. Been to Shanghai many times. Not my favorite city. Doesn’t feel like the big international city it appears to be, wants to be or should be.
