Durand
Hamilton, Ontario
Originally photographed October 2006, remastered May 2009

This is one of Hamilton's best kept secrets. Durand is situated at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment, just southwest of Downtown Hamilton.
Not merely a couple of streets with nice homes--Durand is over 40 city blocks of incredible homes. Many architectural styles can be seen among
these late nineteenth and early twentieth century stately homes and mansions. These pictures don't really do the neighbourhood justice, but
here's a sampling of some of the homes:

great job...I love that neighbourhood.
Sometime if you're bored you should do up a map of Hamilton showing everyone where these different districts are. I think many out-of-towners will be surprised to see how close many of these areas are to the downtown core. This neighbourhood here is considered to be a downtown residential neighbourhood.
A professor of urban studies from NYC was here last year and called Durand one of the most 'intact residential neighbourhoods in North America'.
Even the apartments are beautiful....this is truly a great neighbourhood....had you shown the commercial/retail stretch along James South (which is still part of Durand) folks would appreciate how walkable and close to amenities this neighbourhood is. It's a gem.

Excellent job flar! Definitely one of the many hidden gems of this city. Just people never bother to look outside of the Skyway Bridge to see the city, oh well that's their problem. We can only hope people will start to have another view of the city after seeing photo tours like these of Hamilton.

I would love to afford a place like this

They don't make townhouses like these anymore.

raisethehammer Oct 17, 2006 2:40 PM

it's almost embarassing to use the phrase 'townhouse' to describe this building when you look at the crap we call 'townhouses' today.
One of these sold recently but I forget what the price was.

Gorgeous! It would be great to go back in time to see how they lived and what they did.

Stunning. The thread title does not do this thread any justice. When I saw mansions, I was about to pass it up, but these are incredible. Again, some of these homes scream Detroit.

We could be looking at Chicago's North Shore here. Gorgeous housing stock.

Just wow! Now I love this.

Great neighbourhood! Great houses! Great photos! Thanks

l'm not one for modernism, but I LOVE that square art deco home...the white one overlooking the city.
Killer hood.

flar Oct 17, 2006 6:46 PM

^^ That house is for sale. You can see a picture of the front and inside here:

Actually the link shows a panorama of the street its on, which looks pretty cool too.

**EDIT** come to think of it, I think it's a different square house for sale (still in Durand though)

What an awesome thread. Living in a house like that and in a neighbourhood like that would be sweet.

slymjym Oct 17, 2006 7:08 PM

Looks a lot like some Atlanta neighborhoods IMO...Ponce De Leon area specifically.

matt602 Oct 17, 2006 8:40 PM

Man, some of those houses are like small castles with the towers and what not. I'd love to buy a house like that one day. Would be amazing.

Wheelingman04 Oct 17, 2006 8:43 PM

Hamilton has some strikingly beautiful neighborhoods.

shappy Oct 17, 2006 10:11 PM

awesome, thanks flar. Keep it coming.

the Hammer is getting the job done... (can't believe I wrote that).

spyguy Oct 17, 2006 10:22 PM

Those are some really nice houses. The neighborhood looks largely intact as well.

The southern half of Durand is very well preserved, but over the years, many mansions have been lost. The Durand Neighbourhood Association was formed to protect and preserve the historic character of the neighbourhood. The northern part of the neighbourhood closer to Main St. is almost entirely highrises from the 70's. In the pic below you can see one lonely victorian home (bottom left) among a bunch of apartments.

more apartments in the neighbourhood:
