Beautiful thread. St. John's is gorgeous!

Thank you, frankto. :)
***** A little taste of the nightlife in St. John's. One of our downtown streets, George Street, is lined on both sides with pubs, bars, and nightclubs. It's pedestrian-only once the workday ends, so it's a very popular place for locals to party. This weekend the city is all but deserted because there's a huge summer festival about a five-hour drive away in the central town of Grand Falls-Windsor. So it's not as busy as you'd normally see - but here was our night last night. Warning: coarse language, ha! We also went out on Thursday night, but it was a different sort of night. Just three of us went, and we went to a pub rather than the nightclubs, and listened to a wonderfully talented local singer. We went home before 11 p.m., which is far earlier than the bars here get busy (most only open at 10 p.m.). Last call in St. John's is generally at 3 a.m. but the drinking doesn't usually actually stop until later. And, this morning, I had to walk back downtown to get my car. Here's a little taste of what it's like to walk down to sea level in St. John's. |

Another scorcher for us. It's currently 24C, feels like 27C. The family on the veranda of the blue house was having a grand old time. This is the folk song I could hear them blasting and singing along to: http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...edited_2-L.jpg Row your boat ashore... http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...edited_2-L.jpg http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...8_edited-L.jpg http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...8_edited-L.jpg |
24 is a scorcher? you must have died in the balkans. i climbed up to prizren castle last year when the pharmacy thermometer read 43.

I haven't been yet - but I can't wait. I'm sure it'll be hard (Bermuda was BRUTAL), but I don't mind suffering a little for a new experience - especially one I've been fascinated with for years. I wouldn't even need a tour guide. I even know which bus routes to take. :haha:
And yeah, a humidex of 27C (80.6F) is definitely a scorcher for us. Ready to be perhaps a little bit surprised? Our highest-ever recorded temperature, since records began in the 1800s, is 31.5C (88.7F) (July 6, 1983). We don't get much closer to 30C than today often. In contrast, our coldest-ever recorded temperature is -23.8C (-10.84F) (February 18, 1990). And our averages only span 20C. The average February high (our coldest month) is -1.5C (29.3F). The average July high (our wamest month) is 20.3C (68.54F). |

Anyway, beautiful pictures as always. Just 12 more days and I'll be back! I may kiss the ground in the airport when I land. |
Let me know if people still clap with joy when they land. :) I used to look forward to that, even though most people seem to think it's primitive and more than a bit weird.

Downtown, open-air movie. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...1_edited-L.jpg A gay night at a local pub. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S.../picture-L.jpg |
I've looked at this thread a few times, and realized I'd never commented on it.
It's a great showcase for St. John's. Kudos and keep them coming! :) |

Drag queens take over a regular, straight pub in St. John's for Pride Week. Warning: coarse language. :D
|
The Pride Carnival is one of the best events of Pride Week in St. John's. It gives our drag queens and female burlesque dancers a fun opportunity to perform and it's a great show and party.
Here's a video from last night's Pride Carnival. For you straight guys, the best burlesque dancers start performing at 10:40 and 15:20. |
i love the video/photo mix -- good thread idea.
looks so pleasant compared to the usual sweltering summer we are having -- what a great time of year to be up there. |
Thanks, MrNYC. :) It's been pleasant. We've had a couple of days near 30C (86F) but mostly it's been low 20s (73.4F to 77F).

And, finally, some scenes from the biggest event of Pride Week in St. John's: FRISK! Fetish Night.
It's held at a gay bar, Velvet, but a significant percentage of attendees (I'd estimate a solid 25%) are straight. Straight women LOVE an excuse to really slut it up with corsets, nipple pasties, etc. and the straight guys know where to find them. The club is always as full as its legally allowed to be. The lineup stretches, at times, a city block. Which is a LOT for a city with so many pubs, bars and nightclubs that people generally are unwilling to wait in lines and just go to the next. I didn't really dress up - just put some black tears under my eyes: http://i.imgur.com/rWy9qkh.jpg But most people go for a little more kink: http://i41.tinypic.com/x1dstf.jpg And here it is: I added timestamps because, as in Quebec, most nightclubs in Newfoundland don't get busy until approximately 1 a.m. The fact anyone was there at all before that shows how huge of an event it is for us. |
Simply georgous as always !

I went to Torbay yesterday, August 2, 2013, for a second date with a young man from that suburban town. It was a gorgeous day, a great time, and I snapped a few pictures along the way. One of the highland ponds at the edge of the town, which turned 450 years old last year. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...9_edited-L.jpg http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...0_edited-L.jpg Driving down the steep hill to Tapper's Cove. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...2_edited-L.jpg The view of Torbay from Tapper's Cove. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...8_edited-L.jpg http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...20Stitch-L.jpg http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...20Stitch-L.jpg Torbay is located within the St. John's Metro, so it has some unusually urban buildings for such a small town. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...7_edited-L.jpg Even the most overweight Newfoundlanders are often ripped from the waist down. It's not hard to see why. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...1_edited-L.jpg Torbay. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...5_edited-L.jpg http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...8_edited-L.jpg In Torbay, looking back at Tapper's Cove. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...6_edited-L.jpg The same steep road we drove down earlier. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...20Stitch-L.jpg Farmers in Torbay regularly lose cows that walk off cliffs. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...8_edited-L.jpg The television show Murdoch Mysteries filmed an episode in St. John's. Interestingly, the show was set in 1901 - at that time St. John's was the capital of an independent Newfoundland. So all of the locations where they shot throughout the city were decked out in Union flags and people with period costumes. The police even wore their bobby helmets. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...1_edited-L.jpg But modern members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary kept things running smoothly. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...3_edited-L.jpg And, like every good date in St. John's, it included a sunset from Signal Hill. http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...2_edited-L.jpg http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...h_edited-L.jpg http://www.newfoundland-photos.com/S...7_edited-L.jpg |
