Ontario Stone Towns | ST. MARYS

St. Marys, Ontario

St. Marys, often referred to as "Stonetown," is located on the Thames River north of
London. It was settled in the 1840s and boasts many beautiful 19th century limestone
structures. This is the fifth stone town I've posted; the others are Fergus,
Elora, Galt and Guelph.

Your St. Marys looks about double the size of this one. St. Marys, Ontario is a very small town, about 6000 people.

Now I know where the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame is! Thanks, Flar.

Great tour!

Friends and neighbors, this is what results when a town is built by people who give a damn. Take these lessons and make them your own.

the dude Sep 5, 2008 4:43 PM

nice town. did you get to the hall of fame? they've got a nice ball park there, too.

Jon Dalton Sep 5, 2008 5:50 PM

My old hometown! I figured you'd hit this sooner or later. God, such a beautiful place to grow up.

I lived in this house and my dad preached at that church from 1985-1990. we moved to this horrible suburban tract in Barrie when dad took a job at a bigger church. No wonder I have such a hate on for suburbia now!

Both CN (former Grand Trunk and Great Western) mainlines went through this town - the lines to Sarnia and Windsor. The Sarnia line has since been torn up and made into a walking trail - complete with what's now a huge pedestrian bridge - thus preserving the 100+ year old structure. The VIA still stops here. Two trains a day run towards London and Toronto.

Great tour of a neat little town

Kingofthehill Sep 9, 2008 12:09 AM

I'm absolutely enamored with that architecture.

And the photos were great, like always.

denveraztec Sep 9, 2008 2:53 AM

Gems of structures and excellent shots! Those second empire victorians are rare, great to see some here!

LSyd Sep 10, 2008 4:33 AM

they just don't build 'em like they used to. mostly. which is a shame.

I've never been to St. Marys, and it looks like I should go for a visit.

ColDayMan Sep 11, 2008 1:50 AM

Neat!

flar Sep 14, 2008 11:09 PM

A good hockey town, I recall playing a lot of good hockey teams from St. Marys when I was young.

Thanks all :)
