GDP - World's Metro Areas
Since 2008 I've been organizing GDP tables for American and Brazilian metro areas as data are easy to obtain and sensible definitions are possible to be established.
Anyway, here the last edition of the ranking, with all the US and Brazilian metro areas over 500,000 inh. Data coming from BEA (US) and IBGE (Brazil). As definitions I used CSA for the US and for Brazilians they might be found here. 2011 Country -- GDP 2011 (US$) -- Pop. 2011 USA --- 15.075.675.000.000 --- 311.591.917 Brazil --- 2.492.907.000.000 --- 192.376.496 MAs ------------------- GDP 2011 (US$) -- Pop. 2011 1. Be careful this kind of subject can quickly deteriorate.
For European cities, this is rather a list of the GDP of the region around the city than the metropolitan area. Rhein Rurh Figures are for the whole North Rhine-Westphalia lander, London figure is for the whole South East corner of England Naples figures is for the whole Campania region, Rome figure for the whole Lazio region, Milan figure are for the whole Lombardy region. Some cities have region that are approximately near the size of the metropolitan like Madrid or Paris but most have not. It is better to use data on a lower administrative division like the Provinces for Italy or counties for UK. It would lead to much accurate estimation. |
Note that we already have a thread about that. ;)
Here is the link: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=206907 There are no 2011 data for most European metro areas, because Eurostat hasn't published 2011 regional GDPs yet, so Yuriandrade's figures for most European metro areas are essentially guesstimates. The figures below, on the other hand, are official figures published by Eurostat and other statistical offices. All maps are at the same scale. http://imageshack.us/a/img855/3353/bxp8.png |

There, to illustrate. More than 95% of Moscow's GDP is contained within the red circle. The rest is peanuts.
Here, I've assumed the rest outside of the red circle produces exactly 5% of the yellow area's GDP, i.e. $20.3 bn in 2010, which is very generous for those forests, bogland, and derelict towns. The City of Moscow proper had a GDP of $332.8 bn in 2010, and another $52.5 bn was produced in the suburbs within the red circle if we assume $20.3 bn outside the red circle. http://i39.tinypic.com/34jayv6.png |
Brisavoine, I actually don't have issues on Moscow as I'm fond of broader definitions (on the line with US CSAs) and I know it's impossible to slice Moscow Oblast.
The thing is, your definitions on Brazilian cities are too restrictive and arbitrary. I understand, as you're not familiar with, you feel more confortable to stick with ready stuff. I'm just pointing out they're not comparable with such definitions. |

world's CSAs

yuriandrade, you should combine Washington DC and Baltimore because they are the same CSA

Great Work Yuri...and nice illustrations of the maps New Brisa!

Until 2011, you can see I did the same with Providence. But as we had the 2012's enlargement, I decided it was time to merge it with Boston. Quote:

Personally I've included Baltimore in the Washington DC metro area, because both urbanized areas practically touch each other, and car commute rates in the US are extremely high. On the other hand, I've not included Santos in the São Paulo metro area, because Santos is neatly separated from the São Paulo urbanized area by a mountain range, and motorization rate in Brazil is much lower than in the US, hence less long-distance commuting. |
Where's Munich? The list is garbage :D

On the other hand, although a traditional city, Santos is 25 times smaller than São Paulo. So there's no reason to keep them separated. Quote:
In any case, my definition of São Paulo metro area is extremely compact (12,500 km²), way smaller than Washington-Baltimore CSA. It includes the official metro area plus the neighbouring regions of Santos (south), Jundiaí and Atibaia (north) and São Roque (west). That's São Paulo de facto metro area and it's actually comparable to the US MSAs, not CSAs. About commute, São Paulo and Santos are linked for two highways with ten lanes each. Motorization rates (cars only) in the area is about to reach 500/1,000 inh. Today, using the official São Paulo metro area as the definition for the actual metro area is almost as absurd as using Greater London to define London metro area. Quote:
Let's wait for the Eurostats for smaller units. Then, I'll redraw some European areas. |
I wonder what the GDP is of the whole bosh-wash corridor is?
|
One word "huge".
Take Boston, Hartford, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, the largest cities and you have a GDP above $3,150 billion. |
