Miscellaneous Recent Projects

We have all sorts of threads for skyscrapers and threads for buildings in every stage of proposal and construction possible - but what we don't have is one for recently completed buildings. Particularly smaller, lower-profile buildings that tend to fly under the radar. So let's let this be it.

It's pretty open-ended - this thread will be for things like houses, institutional buildings, museums, low-rise apartments. Even some of the lesser-known high-rise buildings are fair game (we can probably do without photos of Absolute World and the Bow). Just so long as it's more-or-less complete and was built within the past few years. And good. Let's see some of the best of Canada's newest buildings.

Long before I knew what “architecture” was, I came across an illustration – I think it was for Ontario Hydro – of the back of a house with the exterior wall removed, so you could see into all the brightly-lit rooms, hallways and staircases, dollhouse style. I must have stared at this thing for weeks, my childhood mind placing me into those spaces, interacting, relaxing and just generally playing grown-up.

So, even today, when I’m able to see a real house exposed like that, it sends a chill up my spine.

Such is the case in North Toronto, where a house designed by architects Kevin Bridgman and Paulo Rocha, and built by high-end builder Eisner Murray, leaves nothing to the imagination for folks lucky enough to get an invitation into the backyard: chairs, lamps, artwork, fireplace and the second-floor master bedroom are all there, ready to fire the imagination.

The Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has spoken of architectural atmosphere as “this singular density and mood, this feeling of presence, well-being, harmony, beauty” that some buildings embody well.

People on the trail of the perfect house, or who think about architecture at all, are always on the look-out for such atmosphere. And, indeed, one occasionally finds this sense of belonging and homecoming in the single-family homes and even in the residential high-rises we visit. But when we do discover it, the atmosphere is rarely delivered with more tact and clean, quiet grace than I experienced last week in a new house in the South Hill neighbourhood in midtown Toronto.

The dwelling was designed for a young family of five by a team at Atelier Kastelic Buffey (AKB), a local architectural and design firm whose principals, as it happens, have been studying and learning from the work of Zumthor for several years.

The eyeball in the wall is watching.

Luckily, since it’s positioned on a concrete wall near the back of the house, it’s watching proud new homeowners Rasheed and Christine rather than the neighbours. Well, it isn’t watching them yet, since the couple (who have asked to withhold surnames) is currently living and working in London, England. But when they move in this summer, it’ll begin its friendly surveillance.

In reality a large, hammered-brass light fixture inserted into a round opening, the “eyeball” by Unitfive Design, is a fun little detail that gives this Drew Mandel-designed home in the Mount Pleasant and St. Clair area an extra layer of “interest and personality.”

Great thread idea and posts, Monkey. Almost all of those buildings are beautiful. I especially love Residence for the Sisters of St. Joseph, which surprises me because it's not my style at all.

This one is just a failure of conception. Honestly, who thought it would be a good idea to put stylized flowers all over the windows? That's what those are, if you can't tell from the photo: flowers. The windows look like discarded strips of wallpaper. The building is hideous in person.

It was an eyesore the day it went up, and it only continues to get worse as the years go by. At some point they're going to be compelled to replace those flowers with proper windows.

The School of Pharmacy has elements at the top that I don't care for but the complex itself is a terrific (award winning, in fact) design. The stone cladding is exceptional. Re an earlier post, the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo is not part of the University of Waterloo. It is an independent research institute.

I know rousseau isn't the only one who dislikes the School of Pharmacy building, but I actually like it.

They actually look quite cute side-by-each. I'll have to get a picture that shows them both.

Jack Astor's and Legros & Motti, basically an especially fancy harbourfront kiosk on the harbour apron. It literally replaced little wooden chip wagon-style buildings.

Those houses that monkeyronin posted make me weep tears of joy. Just beautiful!

(Although I would warn anyone considering something like the "cutaway house"... my home has similar design cues and as such I have to be careful not to offend the neighbours. Never had those concerns when I was living in a highrise condo...)

Out of curiousity, what about don't you like? It seems to be the kind of building people either love or hate without much in between.

UofT Mississauga has some amazing buildings. Was very surprised when I was dragged out there.

Wow to Winnipeg. Some I've seen before. Others I'm glad to have been introduced.

The Edmonton Art Gallery is just awful. The glass pattern and white mullion caps are the worst.
